shaqShaquille "Shaq" O'Neal is a living legend. He's been an NBA star for 19 years -- whew! -- which makes me feel really old, being that I remember when he was seen as Chicago Bulls' star Michael Jordan's arch nemesis in the early '90s. That's when Shaq played on the Orlando Magic. Since then, the 7'1" player had stints on the L.A. Lakers, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, and most recently, Boston Celtics. All along, he's had a major fan following, and he must know it, because he decided to announce his retirement yesterday via Twitter to his loyal followers.

From his Twitter account, O'Neal tweeted "I'm retiring" and "Shaq ooout," then linked to a video in which he spoke directly to his fans.

Check it out ...

He seems so relaxed, happy, and peaceful! Geesh! I guess who wouldn't be if you knew you'd be retiring at the age of 39 (likely with a load of dinero) and just chill out at wherever the heck that beautiful, waterfront place is where he filmed the video? Although, Shaq seems like the kinda guy who -- like MJ before him -- will keep doing endorsements or entertainment of some kind. (It's already been reported that he'll appear in a new film called Jack & Jill starring Adam Sandler.) But who knows? The ball's in his court! (Tee hee.)

Fans seemed to be equally happy for him, posting on YouTube, "YOU WILL BE MISSED!!!", "The NBA was missing something before you came and it will always miss it after you leave..." Fellow players tweeted their respect, too. L.A. Clippers guard Eric Gordon said:

Shaq one of my favorite players of all-time retired. Probably the most entertaining guy u will ever meet. He will be missed in our league.

Seems the general consensus is that the NBA is losing a dynamic, talented, and very, very tall guy. But no doubt will fans keep on following Shaq as he dribbles off into the sunset!

Will you miss Shaq?
