Gloria JamesGloria James, mom of NBA superstar LeBron James of the Miami Heat, was arrested at a Miami Beach resort in the wee hours of the morning on Thursday, after allegedly slapping a valet. Police say Ms. James was drunk, and she was cited on two misdemeanor counts -- one for battery and one for disorderly intoxication. Ms. James has been arrested in the past for drunk driving.
LeBron doesn't want to talk about his mom's arrest. No worries, LeBron. We know it's a "sensitive subject." Seeing your mom in cuffs for her lawbreaking ways can't be easy. However, we didn't want you to think you are all alone in this. Nope, there are several other moms of professional athletes who have gotten busted for everything from drugs to child neglect.
Let's take a look at 5 Moms of Sports Stars Who Got Popped by Cops!
Carrie Stoudemire mug shot
Carrie Stoudemire, mom of New York Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire
In May 2010, when Amare Stoudemire was playing for the Phoenix Suns, Carrie Stoudemire was arrested for driving a car without an ignition breathalyzer device, and her license indicated "Interlock device required." Sounds like she got a little squirrely with the cops and was transported to jail and issued a citation. She has been in jail dozens of times for charges ranging from drug possession to prostitution.
Angela Bryant (not pictured), mom of Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant
Angela Bryant was convicted for selling crack cocaine in 1997 and served 18 months in prison. She also was arrested in April 2009 after selling crack cocaine to police informants and was sentenced to 10 years' probation. The NYT actually did a feature story on Ms. Bryant and her troubled but fairly amazing past.
Alla Kournikova, mom of tennis player Anna Kournikova
Alla Kournikova was charged with felony child neglect after leaving her 5-year old son Allan alone while she ran errands. The boy jumped out a second-story window while barefoot and also went in the pool before passersby found him all distraught outside the home. Alla was sentenced to three years of probation with random drug testing.
Kimberly Witten, mom of Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten
Kimberly Witten was arrested on charges of stealing about $5,500 from a bank account that was not hers. She was convicted on 25 counts of forgery and one count of theft over $1,000 and sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Jacqueline Standley, mom of Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain
In May 2009, Jacqueline "Jackie" Standley was arrested for selling one gram of methamphetamine to an undercover cop and was sentenced to four years of probation for a felony drug charge. The judge said it appeared that Standley was taking her treatment for substance abuse and mental health issues seriously.
Sweetheart son Joba, upon hearing about his mom's arrest, said
You've only got one mom, man, and you've got to be thankful for her. I still love her.
When asked about his mom's recent arrest, LeBron James told a Miami TV station (via TMZ):
It's very sensitive, because it's your mother, of course... you guys want to ask me anything else about basketball, I'm happy to answer it.
You have to move forward. It is my life, and it is certain things you have to deal with, but like I said, I try not to let it be a distraction. I have a job that I have to do still, at the end of the day.
Sometimes things happen in life. You take care of it and move on.
