If you like satirical, topical humor with intelligent commentary by respected comedians, then you probably like the Daily Show. Comedy Central knows who you are, and thinks you want more of it. If Jon Stewart's show and Stephen's The Colbert Report weren't enough for you, fear not! Sports Show starts on April 12 and will be hosted by former SNL cast member Norm Macdonald.
Sports news will now be funny, I take it. Norm is going to make fun of professional athletes! Isn't that what YouTube is for? Not according to Comedy Central. They think Sports Show will be revolutionary.
I think I liked this show better when it was called SportsDome, The Onion's parody of SportsCenter on ESPN. Do we need two shows like this?
I don't think so. Professional sports can be totally laughable, but that's why we have blooper reels and YouTube videos. Norm is famous for dead-panning the news like he did on "Weekend Update" -- but that just got him fired. People didn't get it. You either loved him or hated him, and I hated him.
Comedy Central explains that Norm will do for sports what Jon Stewart does for politics. But don't people watch shows, and shows about sports, to escape from politics? More snarky comments and long, unblinking stares will leave viewers edgy and pissed.
I feel like we're already laughing at the absurdity of sports and don't need a reminder that if you can carry or throw a ball in our society, you will be one of the richest men in the world. And if you're a woman who can play sports? Enjoy your 9-to-5 job like the rest of us, and coaching your kids' teams and telling them about how back in college you were once interviewed by Digger Phelps.
Sports Show has got a shelf life of about three months. Then that's the ballgame.
Will you give Sports Show a try?
