Well, at least she and everyone else would know that he got them. That must have been what Laura Mendoza Govan thought when she had her ex-boyfriend, Gilbert Arenas, served with child support papers during half time of the game between the Orlando Magic and the Miami Heat Thursday night.
Can you imagine his surprise when the halftime buzzer rang, and he exited the court only to be handed papers from the court?
Arenas, a point guard for the Magic, has three kids with Govan and another on the way. Govan says she and the kids have been "financially cut off," since they broke up this past November. She's reportedly requesting $1.3 million annually. Wowza. I know kids are expensive, but that's a lot of diapers.
She has made known Arenas's lavish spending habits including the fact that he reportedly spends $5,000 a month on food for his pet sharks. Seems like if he's doing that, he should be able to cough up money for his kiddos, no? If he isn't coughing it up, then he deserved to be served, and I'm happy to see it done in such a public way.
But before we cheer her on for women and children everywhere, it's important to know that Arenas disputes her claims.
"I don't pay much attention to it because this is who she is as a person," he said. "It's sad that it has to be in the public's eye. She gets money. I mean when a girl asks for $100,000 a month and you say no, that doesn't mean you're cut off. You're still getting 20. ... That's the thing that bothers me. She tells the world that she's not getting money. She gets $20,000 a month."
If that's the case, then that puts things in a different light and perhaps in the same greedy camp as someone like Nik Pace, perhaps. So at this point, it's a bad he-said, she-said scenario, with kids once again caught in the middle. Hopefully the courts will sort it all out and put an end to the drama. A hearing is set for March 9.
