Pregnancy. It's the most joyful time in a woman's life ... or is it?

While growing a new life inside of you is easily one of the most miraculous things a woman can experience, there are an awful lot of weird things that go along with it.

These are the kind of things I've never seen in any of my pregnancy handbooks, but through word-of-blog, I learned that I was not the only one.

So here you have it: five of the most horrifying pregnancy symptoms you'll never hear about.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer GarnerIt was getting pretty obvious based on her expanding belly, but at last it's been confirmed -- Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck are expecting their third child. It wasn't just another bogus belly bump report (this time), she's really pregnant. Hear that? That's the sound of happy squeals from fans around the world.

Reps for the couple confirmed the news tonight and told the Associated Press the couple is "thrilled," along with the rest of the world. And really, it is some of the best news to come out of Hollywood in awhile.

First Pregnancies Are a Cake Walk (Mmmmm, Cake)

Posted by Linda Sharps

One of my talented co-writers here at The Stir posted an article on how first pregnancies usually seem harder than the subsequent ones—primarily because once you've been through the inflate-to-elephantine-proportions-then-painfully-disgorge-a-small-human-from-your-body process once, the follow-up gestational activities aren't as challenging.

I can agree from a certain perspective. The actual physical effects of pregnancy weren't new the second time around, so everything wasn't quite as terrifying. I didn't spend my entire pregnancy worried about whether or not a briefly inactive fetus meant that the baby was DEAD, for instance. I also didn't bother with renting that fetal doppler thing so I could continually "reassure" myself that the baby's heart was still beating.

Home Pregnancy Tests Are More Complicated Than You'd Think

Posted by Christie Haskell
on Apr 29, 2011 at 5:14 PM

When you're old enough to start making hanky panky with members of the opposite sex, you're old enough to know that it comes with the risks of makin' babies. Even when you take all the precautions in the world, short of having a hysterectomy, you can get knocked up, or at least have a pregnancy scare.

You'd think a home pregnancy test would be easy. After all, you just ... pee on a stick. And wait a couple minutes. Then look at it. All done! Right?

NOT SO FAST!

The truth is most people suck at following directions. Badly. Horribly. Even when it comes to something as "simple" as peeing on a piece of plastic. There is also the few minutes of angst between peeing and results, and things go wrong. Even when we see it on TV, they tend to do it all wrong, too.

If you're thinking, "Seriously? How hard can it be?" check this out:

What Does a Pregnant Emily Deschanel Mean for ‘Bones’?

Posted by Heather Chaet

emily deschanel baby bonesAny other Bones fans out there? Are you just ga-ga over the news that Bones is pregnant? Okay, sorry, Bones isn't pregnant ... Emily Deschanel is pregnant. I know, I know, I have a hard time making that distinction sometimes.

Emily is expecting her first baby -- the actress and real life hubby David Hornsby will be welcoming their new bundle later this year. Which is great. And lovely. And joyous.

But die-hard fans (yes, I am one of them) want to know: how will this affect my TV show?

Mom Has Baby in Circus Toilet, but Doesn't Remember

public bathroomJessica Blackham, 24, went to see the Barnum & Bailey Circus at a South Carolina arena last Friday evening. When she went to the restroom, she delivered a baby there in the toilet. Then she left. She claims she never knew she was pregnant, and that she actually forgot she gave birth. Really?

Everybody deserves the benefit of the doubt, and yes, there are supposedly women who give birth to babies without ever knowing they're pregnant. I question how many REALLY don't know, but I suppose there are a few. But to expect us to believe that she was one of those few women AND she has amnesia about birth (birth!), well that's just asking for a little too much given the facts.

A man who claims to be the father agrees and said she knew full well she was pregnant.

Could You Really Not Know You Were Pregnant?

Posted by Christie Haskell
on Jan 11, 2011 at 7:00 PM

You've seen that show I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant, right? Every time it's mentioned, people say things like, "You've have to be an idiot not to know!" or "All those women are really obese." Neither of which is true, or at least not every single time.

Women find out they're pregnant at all different points in their pregnancies. I didn't find out I was pregnant with Rowan until 11 weeks along, and didn't have my first appointment until 13 weeks. But I knew at 3-1/2 weeks when I was pregnant with Aurora.

Amongst my friends, the variation is much more extreme, and of course, even more so from people out there I don't know.

Doctor Prescribes Pot to Pregnant Woman

Posted by Julie Ryan Evans

medical marijuanaMedical marijuana is said to do wonders for certain people, but there are also some people who just shouldn't be prescribed it. Like, oh say, a woman who is pregnant. But that's just what a doctor in Colorado did, and now he's blaming the woman.

According to an article in the Denver Post, in January Dr. Manuel Aquino prescribed pot to a woman who was six months pregnant. He did so after a three-minute visit during which he didn't exam her or her medical history or even ask if she was pregnant. Stoners put Dr. Aquino on speed dial -- a score has never been so easy.

Kim Kardashian Not Pregnant, Just Hungry

Posted by Julie Ryan Evans
on Dec 15, 2010 at 2:00 PM

Kim KardashianThough Kim Kardashian is dating NBA star Kris Humphries (for the minute anyway), it has done little to quell rumors that she's pregnant with Kanye West's baby or anyone else's baby for that matter. But Kim -- who notably has been named as holder of the 2010 World's Best Bum -- says she's not pregnant; she's just packed on a few pounds.

Apparently while in New York filming Kourtney and Kim Take New York, she's taken to eating from food carts and is amazed by just how good the food that comes from them is. She blames all the hot dogs, ice cream, and roasted nuts for her protruding pooch.

Psychic Cat Predicts Pregnancy & Yours Might Too

Posted by Amy Kuras
on Nov 5, 2010 at 9:00 PM

catsSome people think cats are spooky, some think they are gorgeous, and some people think cats are psychic and can predict pregnancy. Some even believe that cats can tell you all about it because they can talk.

That's what self-described "creature clairvoyant" Joanne Hull said happened to her when she went on a UK morning show earlier this year. Hull believes she has a unique connection with animals and she can communicate with them. She claims that while she was on the show, host Holly Willoughby's cat spoke to her and informed her the TV star would shortly be pregnant with her second child. Sure enough, Willoughby recently confirmed her pregnancy.

Okay, you're totally making the finger-twirling-next-to-your-head crazy sign right now, aren't you? But wacky as that sounds, pets sense things and they are known to predict pregnancy.
