A Mom's Life, Uncensored

We all love Jill Smokler, better known by many as Scary Mommy. Her blog has made us laugh, cry, and sigh with relief a million times (sometimes in a single day).

So everyone was thrilled when she came out with her new book, Confessions of a Scary Mommy. Like her blog, we relate. And we think you will, too. Here is an excerpt:

Back in 2003, I was working in store design for my favorite company. My simple life consisted of shopping, eating out with my husband, drinking with friends, and shopping some more. Did I mention shopping? Because it was the biggest part of my life. My job, which involved decorating a beautiful store with things I could buy myself at a steep discount, was the perfect fit for a self-absorbed girl like me.

Drew Barrymore Reveals a Baby Bump... We Hope! (VIDEO)

drew barrymoreThe Drew Barrymore pregnancy rumors intensify! She was seen yesterday in a semi-sheer t-shirt that seemed to reveal a baby bump. Is Drew pregnant? Just a few weeks ago we heard she left a doctor's office holding a sonogram (squee!). And now here she is, sporting a little somethin' somethin' there around the belly area.

The timing sure is right. She's engaged to Will Koperman. And going by the size of that belly, relative to the circumference of those slim arms... hold on, let me get my calipers. I'd say she's about four months along. Hey, I'm no expert, just a total guess.

pregnancy test, creative ways to announce your unexpected pregnancy

It’s one thing to announce your pregnancy when you have meticulously planned and prayed for a child. Everyone is waiting patiently for the big announcement and when it finally comes, it warrants nothing less than a ticker tape parade.

When you get pregnant unexpectedly; as a teenager, being unwed, having sworn to anyone who will listen that you were DONE, or worse falling into the advanced maternal age category, it can be a completely different story.

It may feel a bit more anxiety ridden because, though it may be the greatest unexpected blessing to ever come into your life, you fear what others reactions might be. I’ve come up with a few ways to break the news to unsuspecting friends and family members.

woman holding a dogWe all know the signs of to look for when our biological clocks is going off. It’s pretty obvious to know when we have baby on the brain. Suddenly, anything and everything baby sends our uterus into a 7.6 babyquake. But what about when we are done? Maybe we have bypassed the wanting to be pregnant altogether. Or maybe our biological clock has died. May it rest in peace. It happens. Not all of us want to have children, some of us are perfectly happy with our lives as they are.

Here are a few signs that your biological clock may have stopped working:

'What to Expect When You're Expecting the AntiChrist' Is the Antidote to Bummer Baby Books

what to expect antichrist coverWhat drove me crazy about pregnancy books during my own two pregnancies was the unspoken yet very palpable undercurrent of doom they all seemed to have in common. I had one friend who used to refer to the preggers bible What to Expect When You're Expecting as "What to Worry About This Month"; another called it "Neuroses to Expect When You're Expecting." Still another pal preferred "Eating Disorders to Expect When You're Expecting," thanks to the bleak dietary advice (which basically boils down to this: Eat anything besides wheat germ and cottage cheese and you'll give birth to an alien).

That's why I got a huge kick out of the new book What to Expect When You're Expecting the AntiChrist by Stephen Rhinehart-Jones and Josephine Rooney. Part of the End Times Handbooks series, this hilarious send-up of traditional mom-to-be literature calls out every paranoia-inducing "guide" on the shelves.

It wasn't just another bogus belly bump report (this time), she's really pregnant. Hear that? That's the sound of happy squeals from fans around the world.

First Pregnancies Are a Cake Walk (Mmmmm, Cake)

One of my talented co-writers here at The Stir posted an article on how first pregnancies usually seem harder than the subsequent ones—primarily because once you've been through the inflate-to-elephantine-proportions-then-painfully-disgorge-a-small-human-from-your-body process once, the follow-up gestational activities aren't as challenging.

I can agree from a certain perspective. The actual physical effects of pregnancy weren't new the second time around, so everything wasn't quite as terrifying. I didn't spend my entire pregnancy worried about whether or not a briefly inactive fetus meant that the baby was DEAD, for instance. I also didn't bother with renting that fetal doppler thing so I could continually "reassure" myself that the baby's heart was still beating.

Home Pregnancy Tests Are More Complicated Than You'd Think

Posted by Christie Haskell
on Apr 29, 2011 at 5:14 PM

When you're old enough to start making hanky panky with members of the opposite sex, you're old enough to know that it comes with the risks of makin' babies. Even when you take all the precautions in the world, short of having a hysterectomy, you can get knocked up, or at least have a pregnancy scare.

You'd think a home pregnancy test would be easy. After all, you just ... pee on a stick. And wait a couple minutes. Then look at it. All done! Right?

NOT SO FAST!

The truth is most people suck at following directions. Badly. Horribly. Even when it comes to something as "simple" as peeing on a piece of plastic. There is also the few minutes of angst between peeing and results, and things go wrong. Even when we see it on TV, they tend to do it all wrong, too.

If you're thinking, "Seriously? How hard can it be?" check this out:

emily deschanel baby bonesAny other Bones fans out there? Are you just ga-ga over the news that Bones is pregnant? Okay, sorry, Bones isn't pregnant ... Emily Deschanel is pregnant. I know, I know, I have a hard time making that distinction sometimes.

Emily is expecting her first baby -- the actress and real life hubby David Hornsby will be welcoming their new bundle later this year. Which is great. And lovely. And joyous.

But die-hard fans (yes, I am one of them) want to know: how will this affect my TV show?
