Cute Time-Lapse Video Shows Scary Side of Scheduling an Early Birth (VIDEO)

time lapse videoEveryone loves a good time-lapse video, especially one that shows the glorious transformation of a woman's body throughout pregnancy. Those who are diligent enough to document the whole journey have produced some amazing keepsakes and a look at the remarkable process that takes place during those nine months. The March of Dimes has gotten in on the action as well, but for a much more pointed reason -- to let women know that ALL nine months are important for a developing baby.

With so many early inductions and scheduled c-sections, babies are often missing out on important days and weeks of growing time that could cause long-term problems in the future. The primary message: A healthy baby is worth the wait.

5 Even Deadlier Pregnancy Sins I Confess to Committing

Posted by Catherine Donaldson-Evans
on Apr 21, 2012 at 12:00 PM

Okay, it's time to come clean. Last week I wrote about some of the deadly pregnancy sins I committed when I was expecting my baby girl (who's 5 months old today!). I thought I was being all sly and funny and bad-ass. Not really, but I at least thought I was being funny. What I didn't anticipate was that I'd be called out by some of you REALLY bad-ass moms who treated pregnancy like it was New Year's Eve on crack. At least that's what you told me in the comments. In no uncertain terms, you said some of my deadly sins were lame.

I'm here to tell you that I wasn't entirely forthcoming before. I played it safe and chose to write about pregnancy faux pas I accidentally fell into. What I didn't tell you about were the ones I knowingly, willingly, joyfully embraced ... and let me warn you, they are seriously criminal. Let's just hope child services isn't reading THIS post.

6 Deadly Sins of Pregnancy I Confess to Committing

Posted by Catherine Donaldson-Evans

pregnant stomachI've always been a careful person, a woman with a good head on her shoulders who tends to make wise choices. I said "tends to." That means I slip up from time to time. Or, if you count my nine months of pregnancy, a lot.

I read a zillion expectant mom books and took good notes at the doctor's. I stayed away from the bad fish and alcohol and painkillers other than the occasional Tylenol. I didn't whiten my teeth. I took care of myself and my growing baby and was generally healthy (we won't talk about that month of weekly candy binges). But I still unwittingly committed 6 of the pregnancy deadly sins.

I could blame my blond hair. It's a convenient excuse for what those who know me well dub my "Catherine moments." Or I could blame pregnancy brain. But in the end, all I can do is blame my own damn ditzy self.

Latest News on Pregnancy & Cell Phones Will Make You Drop That Call

boy with phoneIf you're not already paranoid enough about what you eat, drink, and breathe, along comes another study to freak out pregnant moms. Researchers at Yale said they found that radiation from cell phones could cause behavior problems in children down the line.

Sound familiar? Yes, it's not the first study to link behavior and prenatal exposure to cell phones. We've heard it all before, though the researchers in this latest study say, "This is the first experimental evidence that fetal exposure to radiofrequency radiation from cellular telephones does in fact affect adult behavior." They found mice that were exposed to the radiation in the womb had more symptoms of ADHD -- they were more hyperactive and anxious and had poorer memories. Eeek!

New 'Belly Armor' Is Good News for Laptop Addicted Moms

Posted by Mary Fischer
on Mar 12, 2012 at 4:36 PM

Um -- did you know that your laptop can be unsafe for your growing baby while you are pregnant? Because I had no idea. I always knew that you weren't supposed to stand in front of the microwave or have an x-ray or anything like that, but I had no idea that the simple act of trying to do your job each day or update your Facebook status could actually harm your baby. Isn't anything safe anymore? Good grief!

It turns out that you may be unknowingly exposing your bun in the oven to radiation if you are doing your typing with your computer in your lap. And considering how many of us have laptops these days, odds are good that there are plenty of women who aren't aware that they may be using something that can potentially harm their baby.

Going to an OB/GYN or a midwife is rarely a whole lot of fun for a pregnant woman. At best, we are uncomfortable and bloated and STILL pregnant, and at worst, we are having our inner body probed and prodded while we feel pretty unattractive.

Now, yes, of course, pregnancy is a beautiful thing and we are lucky to experience it and all that. But wow. It can also just be brutally humiliating, disgusting, and sometimes even terrifying.

With that in mind, The Stir has gathered 11 true humiliating and funny stories from moms across the country (identified only by their first initial) proving you aren't alone. Here they are:

Ban on Pregnant Women Buying Alcohol Is Outrageous

drinking while pregnantWhile some say a little in moderation is okay, most in the medical profession agree that by and large drinking alcohol while pregnant is potentially dangerous to a baby's health. So we might as well just go ahead and ban pregnant women from even buying alcohol, right?

That's what lawmakers in South Africa want to do. According to IOL News, draft legislation of the Gauteng Liquor Bill would include a ban on selling alcohol to "minors, anyone wearing a school uniform, anyone who 'reasonably appears to be intoxicated', or pregnant women."

It's outrageous in so many ways, it's hard to know where to begin.

Mom's Tragic Death Highlights Risks of Home Births

on Feb 2, 2012 at 9:43 PM

baby footA story broke yesterday that will put a chill into the heart of any expectant mom. But it will likely come as a particularly unwelcome shock to those who are planning for a home birth: A young Australian woman who had been a staunch, outspoken advocate for home birth, died last week following the birth of her second child, whom she delivered at home, attended by midwives.

According to reports, 36-year-old Caroline Lovell was able to hold her newborn daughter in her arms, but was already in cardiac arrest and critical condition when paramedics arrived to transport her to the hospital for care. Lovell died the next day. Her baby, Zahra, survived. Lovell also had a 3-year-old daughter, named Lulu.

The Internet Makes Pregnancy Much Scarier Than It Is

Posted by Julie Ryan Evans
on Jan 30, 2012 at 12:01 PM

pregnant at computerWhen it comes to pregnancy, the Internet can be a vast source of helpful knowledge, but it can also be a tricky terrain laden with landmines of myths, misinformation, and anxiety-inducing anecdotes that will just cause you to freak out for no reason. That's why it's concerning that almost 20 percent of pregnant women use the Internet as their primary source of information about their pregnancy.

That doesn't mean 20 percent surf the web here and there, but a small study from the University of Cartuja in Spain rather found that this large percentage of women get MOST of their information from the web. Knowing what's out there, that's kind of scary.

Home Births Get Even Trendier (But Not In My House)

Posted by Amy Reiter
on Jan 26, 2012 at 11:51 PM

home birthWould you ever consider a home birth? If so, you're in growing company: The number of women skipping the hospital and delivering their babies right in the comfort of their own bedroom (or bathroom or kitchen or, for all I know, TV room) has risen sharply in the past few years, according to government data released Thursday. How sharply? Well, between 2004 and 2009, home births here in the United States shot up a full 29%.

Although overall it's still less than one percent of women who opt to give birth at home, that's a pretty dramatic trend. So, seriously, would you do it?
