When it came to bringing her second child into the world, James Van Der Beek's wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, was determined to have a home birth under any circumstances -- even if it meant going against her doctor's orders.

After delivering her first child, daughter Olivia, at the hospital with the help of a doula, an epidural, and pitocin, Kimberly knew she wanted to do things differently the second time around. She wanted to give birth to her baby boy naturally at home -- but then her doctor discovered that baby Joshua was breech when Kimberly was 37 weeks pregnant.

And that changed everything, because she was informed her that if they could not get the baby to flip -- she'd have to have a c-section to deliver him. It was just too risky to try a vaginal delivery because there was a chance that her baby could become trapped in her pelvis.

I can think of lots of reasons why someone might choose to have a medication-free birth at home. Wanting to feel comfortable and secure in a familiar, cozy environment, for instance. Hoping for a quiet, more intimate bonding and breastfeeding experience after birth. Believing that pain and labor can be better controlled without medical interventions, and that interventions often lead to complications. But I have to say, I've never heard someone say that they want a natural delivery for bragging rights.

I kind of have to give model Amber Rose props for coming right out and sharing the REAL reason she's planning to have her baby at home. It also makes me wonder -- how many other moms secretly had the exact same motivation?

Even if you're one of those moms who wants the epidural on the way to the hospital if possible (raises hand), the idea of giving birth at home seems very lovely, gentle and serene compared with the clinical hospital setting. That's what CafeMom member Emily thought too. She had her first daughter at home with a midwife and wanted to do the same with her second daughter, but this time she wanted to do it in the water.

    She shares her story here:

Model, actress, natural cosmetic maker Josie Maran is one inspiring mama! She gave birth to baby number two in her backyard. Certainly more primal than a homebirth, right? Makes me want to have another baby just so I could have the little one under my favorite tree in the yard of the house we just moved into.

There are certainly many pros of having a backyard birth over a birth in the house. Cleanup is a big one. If already outside you can take that pool of water and easily let it soak into the earth. Or use it to water the plants -- nutrient rich! Ina May Gaskin would certainly be very proud of Josie. In just four short hours, she gave birth in nature beside her Pennsylvania farmhouse under a honeysuckle bush surrounded by friends and family. Her experience sounds amazing.

The idea of having a home birth can be a little bit scary, but in the latest episode of Birth Stories on CafeMom Studios, a mom named Darci shared her story about having two babies at home -- and how it felt more like a party to her than an ordeal.

Darci was dead set on having a home birth because she always associated hospitals with people who are sick and/or dying, and she didn't want those feelings to ruin her experience while she brought her first baby into the world.

Home birth vs. hospital. It's a heated debate among moms.

Many can't imagine delivering a baby anywhere other than a delivery room with an army of doctors and nurses at the ready, while the other side wouldn't even consider that sterile, cold environment.

Well, the death of an Australian newborn during a water delivery should have home advocates questioning how safe that choice really is. After an investigation, a coroner concluded that the lack of professional medical care contributed to the baby's death.

Do you have a definite birth plan in place? And if so, do you plan on having a home birth instead of checking into the hospital? If you do, then you'll want to hear about what happened to a mom named Betsy when her home birth visions didn't exactly play out the way she expected.

For one thing, she wound up being in labor for almost 10 days! She walked all over town and stayed active to try and get her baby moving, but nothing worked. And then when she finally thought she couldn't take it anymore, the weather took a turn for the worse, and she had to endure torrential rain for two days, making it impossible for her midwife to get to her house in the event that her baby was ready to be delivered.

For weeks we've been hearing how Kourtney Kardashian plans to give birth to her second child a la naturale in a bathtub. No drugs. Just Kourt, baby daddy Scott Disick, a tub full of warm water (no bath salts!), and a serene and sloshy birth. But, what's this? Apparently Kourtney has changed her mind. And changed it as in not in a gazillion damn years am I having no damn water birth! TMZ says that Kourt's change of heart (or uterus?) came after watching the waterbirth of a friend, who predictably screamed bloody murder through the whole thing. Now Kourt apparently wants an epidural, a hospital, and a grande birth suite a la Jessica/Beyonce.

Kourtney Kardashian plans to make a splash during her delivery -- literally. The reality star has opted for a water birth. That means, instead of heading to the hospital when those contractions kick in, she will fill up the tub or kiddie pool.

Apparently, she was hooked on the idea after seeing one a few weeks back. “Witnessed a water birth last night with @KhloeKardashian. What an experience! All I can say is WOW!” she tweeted.

Even if the name Jim Gaffigan doesn't ring a bell, chances are you know who this funny man is. He's been in lots of movies -- Super Troopers, Away We Go -- and TV shows -- My Boys, Law & Order, That '70s Show. Plus, he does stand-up and has been a talking head on those VH1 shows many times. He was recently on Late Night With David Letterman talking about home births. He's kind of an expert. His wife Jeannie had all four of their children at home. Yep, four times!

I love Gaffigan's deadpan take on it, telling Letterman that his wife wanted to make him as terrified as possible when asked why they chose home birth. He even jokes how it's a topic no one really wants to talk about and how his friends have told him that they had their babies in the hospital because they wanted the baby to live.

Of course, it's all for laughs. Let's roll the videotape ....
