baby nurseryI have joked a time or two with new mom friends that it would be glorious if we could leave the hospital for a few days after delivering a baby just to recover while the nurses in the maternity ward take care of the child. Never again. For one mom in Greece, the joke has become a reality!

According to reports out of the country that's quickly becoming infamous for financial instability, one new mom didn't have enough money to pay for her C-section. So the hospital decided to hold her newborn baby hostage until she came up with the cash!

Mom Gives Birth in Hospital Waiting Room With Devastating Results

on May 21, 2012 at 4:21 PM

hospital waiting roomGoing through labor and delivery only to wind up losing your baby at the end has got to be one of the most devastating experiences a mother can go through, as an English woman named Sara Proud knows all too well.

Sara went into labor and was taken to the hospital by her partner, Steven Yorke, but when they arrived, they were told to move into a waiting room instead of her being admitted into the hospital. They stayed in that room for 80 minutes, when Sara's labor progressed, and Yorke realized she needed help immediately. He went to find someone to assist, and while he was searching, Sara delivered a baby boy right there in the waiting room.

The poor baby was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, and eventually two midwives did take him away to try and bring him back to life. Sadly, they were unable to revive him, and he passed away -- all while his poor mother was still in the waiting room -- delivering her own placenta.

what to expect when you're expecting movieThe latest film chronicling the road to parenthood hits theaters today! Yep, What to Expect When You're Expecting, the movie very very VERY loosely based on the popular guidebook for expectant parents, is here and jam packed with big celebrity names, including Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth BanksMatthew Morrison, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock, and more!

The story follows five couples as they trudge through the pre-baby preparation process and all its highs and lows. But do they get it right? Isn't that what you really want to know? How realistic is What to Expect's representation of pregnancy and waiting for baby? Well, I watched the movie with a critical been there, done that mom eye, and here's my review of what they got right and what they got wrong ...

Rosie PopeIn exciting news for Rosie Pope, star of Pregnant in Heels, she and her husband, Daron, welcomed their third child into the world this weekend. Their first daughter, named Vivienne Madison Pope, was born on Mother's Day, and they're thrilled to give their two older sons, ages 3 and 15 months, a little sister.

In strange, TMI news, Pope tweeted her entire delivery. I'm not talking just a tweet here or there when she was getting ready to go to the hospital, but rather she provided a whole stream of tweets describing the whole process while it was happening.

Woman Gives Birth to Twins at Home of Parents Adopting Them

baby feetI think sometimes we forget the power of our bodies. But this birth story will help you remember. A Michigan woman named Lindsay was pregnant with twins that she was giving up for adoption to Julie and Mike. And for the birth of these twins, this family was going to be bonded in such a beautiful way. Surrounded by a midwife, a doula, Mike and Julie, and friends, including a photographer, the birth took place at the adoptive parents home.

A home birth of twins is amazing. I'm a mother of twins and I love hearing stories like this confirming that multiples can be born naturally. And having these beautiful babies in the home of the parents is just incredible. As the photographer Jaclyn Michele says about the birth, "It takes a village," and this story is proof.

Lindsay gave birth to these two babies in just two hours on their due date.

6-Year-Old Girl Helps Deliver Her Baby Brother

baby handsA mom in California got the surprise of her life earlier this week when she went into early labor and had her water break right there in her living room. But for Destiny Padilla, the realization that she was going to have her baby in her own house wasn't her biggest shock -- because her 6-year-old daughter was the one who stepped up to the plate to help deliver the baby!

Destiny admits being scared because her cellphone battery was dead, so she couldn't call 911 for help right away. The only person there to assist her was her little girl, Nevaeh, who understood her mom's fragile state and immediately started trying to keep her calm. And after the phone charged a bit and they were able to get through to 911 operators, they worked together to make sure the baby was born safely. Nevaeh even helped her mom tie off the umbilical cord!

Being the parent of a 6-year-old myself, I can't even imagine being in that situation.

Maternity Ward Outbreak Shows How Contagious Pregnancy Can Be

Posted by Julie Ryan Evans
on Apr 26, 2012 at 8:58 PM

pregnant bellyIt's weird how you go your whole life never realizing how many pregnant women there are walking around at any given time, UNTIL you get pregnant (or want to become pregnant) yourself.  Then all of a sudden, it seems everyone around is you is pregnant, and you start feeling like maybe it's contagious because more and more people you know start announcing their news.

For some women who work in a maternity ward in the UK, however, that whole phenomenon has been nothing short of phenomenal. According to an article in The Sun, nine women who work in the maternity unit at Wansbeck Hospital in Northumberland have recently given birth or are currently pregnant. That includes seven midwives, one consultant, and a secretary. In this case, you really do have to wonder what's in the water there.

Just last month, Christine Bolden, 26, was happy, seemingly healthy, and pregnant with twins. While walking with her boyfriend and 3-year-old son, she felt a severe pain in her head. According to reports, she then fell to the ground and looked as if she had fallen "into a deep sleep."

She never woke up and later was declared brain dead as a result of two brain aneurysms, according to 24 Hours News 8. Her twins, however, lived on, as Bolden's family waited with hope and determination, rubbing her belly and talking to the babies. After six weeks on life support, things got critical, and it was time to deliver the babies ... at just 25 weeks gestation.

Trying to Rush Into Labor Will Only Make It Take Longer

Posted by Michele Zipp

labor and delivery roomYou know what's amazing about giving birth? The fact that we can. And we do. Every day. Birth is something women can do just like we can twiddle our thumbs. But imagine someone said you can't twiddle your thumbs anymore. Or that you were doing it wrong and you need help to twiddle. Even though you knew your thumbs were made for twiddling, you'd start to doubt your twiddling abilities.

Chances are you can twiddle your thumbs. And you can birth your baby. (Barring any complications which would result in a c-section, which, yes, is just another way to birth your baby.) But a new study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology has revealed that we spend "much more time" in labor now than 50 years ago makes me think this is because we are rushing to go into labor, which leads to medical intervention and therefore a longer labor.

Isable Delgado-HerreraEverything was going well when Isabel Delgado went into labor. She'd planned a hospital delivery for the birth of her fourth child, and unlike some women who end up delivering on the side of the road because they don't make it in time, she was there in the delivery room and ready.

Then it was time to push ... but there was no doctor to be found. According to KENS5, the San Antonio couple sent their nephew out to find a doctor, but he found none -- just a nurse. Dad David Herrera told the station, "When he comes back in finally, like, 'Uncle David, there's no doctors.'"
