A CafeMom user is 38 weeks pregnant, and all she can think about is where her water might break.
She feels like she needs to walk around with a towel and trash bags just in case.
She's heard that amniotic fluid smells really bad and she's scared it's going to gush all over her car, bed or couch ... or worse! ... someone else's car or couch! (The foul smell is actually a myth; it smells sweet if anything at all.)
I thought about this, too. My friends told me horror stories about the mall, the public library, the grocery store. (Some friends.) I wondered if I squeezed my thighs together really hard if I'd be able to stanch the flow, silly me.
When my doctor finally broke my water in the hospital, I thanked GOODNESS it never happened in public. I couldn't believe the fire hose squirting out of me.
But it totally depends. A lot of moms report leaking before the dam breaks, giving you some time to make it to the bathroom. Some say their water breaking was no big deal at all.
One mom's story gave me a good chuckle:
"Mine leaded a little bit at first but then it GUSHED in the van all of the way to the hospital. No foul smell or anything but they did have to put out the "wet floor" signs all through the ER (where I had to register) and up to the maternity ward!"
Are you worried about your water breaking in public? Anyone's water break in a really strange place?

when the doctor broke my water, i did not even know it, he was leaving the room and I had to ask him, " So when are you going to break my water." " I just did" he replied, i had a catherter in an epidural and an iv so i guess i wasn't aware of my water it must not of been too bad since i di not know he was doing it.
Both times I was pregnant the my water was broke in the hospital. With my first, I did not know it but with my daughter, it was a crazy gush!
My friend said she was in the grocery store when hers broke and she said at first she felt like she was peeing and then all of the sudden it kind of gushed. She said she dropped a jar of pickles on the floor and bolted out of the store. She didn't want anyone to know what was on the floor. She also said she was glad that in her child birth class they told her to carry towels in her car for the last trimester! I am glad I never experienced anything like that. hee hee
mine broke in bed while i was sleeping. i felt like i peed myself and i woke up in a huge puddle of water, it kept gushing when i ran to the toilet and than when we were in the car and than it just kept on gushing at the hospital! i didnt know so much water was in there.
With my daughter my water broke while I was sitting in a restaurant and my DH and I were waiting for the check. And it was no slow trickle of water, it was a huge gush of water! Luckily it was dark, not many people were in the restaurant, we were off in a corner table by ourselves, and as I rushed outside to our truck DH and the waitress cleaned it up pretty quickly (she got a good tip, don't worry, lol). This baby, well, we'll see what he or she has in store for me, but just in case I have an extra set of clothes in my truck along with a couple of towels, lol!
My water never broke. My son was born in the caul. (amniotic sac intact around him) I was always worried it was going to break at the gym on an elliptical machine or something! :) Maybe next time!
Jagrus- Your doctor ruptured your membranes without asking your permission? What happened to informed consent? I guess he didn't mention that you're more likely to have a cord prolapse (cord comes through cervix before baby's head. Automatic c-section) with artificial rupture of membranes and that he put you on a timeline. It is usually hospital policy that you have to have your baby 24 hours after your water breaks and if you don't you get sectioned. :/
w/ both of my sons my water broke while I was in bed. Both times it was no big deal, didn't even get the bed wet. Then I rushed to the hospital. With my third child I had an amazing homebirth. My water didn't break till my first push while I was in the birthing pool(I rented). 2 more pushes and my baby girl was in my arms.
Hmmm, I never really thought about it lol. With my daughter, I had gestational hyper tension and delivered her at 38 weeks because they had to induce me due to the fact I had only one good fluid sac left. So they broke my water and there really wasnt that much that I can remember. So, yeah, never really worried about it at all lol.
with my first, my water broke in my bed at night while I was sleeping! with my second, it didn't break on it's own...with my third, it broke in the toilet...lol I had just sat down to go to the bathroom and I felt a huge pop and a big gush into the toiltet! lol! guess I got lucky with that one :-)
