I know two Charlottes, both new to the world. One goes by Charlotte, the other Charlie. I love both options. Charlie sounds fun and tough; Charlotte, more serious and sophisticated.

The name is of English and French origins and means "tiny, feminine, and manly." Hmmm. I wouldn't want my daughter to be "manly," but I do like the idea of a combination of toughness and femininity. Maybe that's why I like "Charlie" so much.

The name Charlotte has been steadily increasing in popularity over the past decade. According to the Social Security Administration, it was the 308th most popular girl's name in 1999, and was up to number 87 by 2008. (The 2009 baby name rankings aren't out yet.)

According to the Baby Name Finder, there are 641 moms on CafeMom who have named their daughters Charlotte. Celebrities who have given their daughter the name include Harry Connick Jr. and his wife Jill Goodacre Connick, and Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr.

What do you think of the name Charlotte?
