My godson, who was born in December, was named August, but his parents call him Gus. I really like the name, but I don't think I would have gone with a nickname.
Variations of the name are Augusteen, Augustine, Augusten, Augusta and Augustus. The names mean things like venerated, great, majestic dignity, grandeur.
Here's something that surprised me: I always thought August was primarily for boys, but according to the Baby Name Finder, there are 32 moms on CafeMom with daughters named August—and none with boys.

i usually dont like names that are also other words but i dont mind June, but i dont really like August. but its not the worst ive heard.
I like June too. That will be my daughter's middle name if this baby is a girl.
I have a nephew named August. It is a family name on my Sister in law's side. I think it is a good, stong name.
