I wasn't in my 40s when I gave birth, but close -- I was 38. But I have two good friends at the moment who are over 40 and expecting. And there are plenty of 40-something CafeMoms.
Good news, older mamas! Having a baby later in life may mean you live longer.
New research says that women who have babies naturally in their 40s or even 50s tend to have longer lifespans than other women (it may be different for women who conceive using IVF or other common procedures used to treat infertility.)
Some feel there are social and emotional benefits to having babies later, too -- Cafe Suzanne posted a while back on Salma Hayek, who says that she's a better mom for having had her baby at age 41.
Are you an older pregnant mama? Did you plan to have your baby later, or was it a surprise? What do you think are the benefits or drawbacks?

I had my daughter 11 years ago I was 42 I already had children. She has pretty older siblings. She is a joy to be with. I don't know about a longer lifespan but, I know that these babies are calmer than babies you have inyour twenties.
I had my little guy at 41 and I have loved every minute of being a mom. I am 46 and would still like to have another!!! I just wish I knew some older moms in my area to get together and discus issues --- and our kids. I don't feel like I have as much in common with 20-30yr old moms.
I'm wondering if the connection is actually having babies older or if those who are more healthy naturally just tend to have babies later. In other words, at 40 I would not have felt physically good enough to have a baby. Whereas someone in better health, who would live longer anyway, would.
I have had 3 babies in my forties. I am 45 now and would like another. I did not wait late in life to have children though. I had children in my 20's and 30's so I can compare the differences . Now I feel more confident in abilities and knowledge and do not waste time reading and trying to follow the latest advice from so called experts. I think women who can get pregnant in their forties are healthier and could live longer just because they are healthier, not because they have babies. I do think little ones keep you feeling younger mentally though. But my physical stamina was a little less now than in earlier pregnancies.
I'm 37 and expecting my first...No problems and I'm thrilled to be becoming a mom! I feel more settled and calm than I did in my 20's and early 30's. I think I'll make a better parent than I would have when I was younger!
I just had my 3rd baby at 38 and I love it, I am a better mom now than when I had my first at 28!
hi, i am 41 and have about 8 more weeks to go to deliver twins. I have 4 older boys ages 21,20,18 and 7. This was a surprise but we are very excited about it. I never thought i would have twins and especially at this age. I noticed even with my 7 yo being about 10 yrs from my 18 yo it is different and i think you notice and appreciate more as you are older . I am so excited for these two little ones to get here, it will be a whole new experience.
What is this based on? Where's the research?
