I just read about a pregnant British woman facing possible execution by firing squad in Laos -- she goes on trial this week.
Apparently, the woman, 20, was arrested back in August for drug trafficking. She was alleged to have been carrying a little over two pounds of heroin and, in Laos, the death penalty would be the typical sentence for that amount of drugs.
She became pregnant in prison and, given her age and the circumstances, British officials working on her behalf are concerned about her health and worried that the sex act may not have been consensual.
The woman's mother, who lives in Dublin, learned about her daughter's plight from the British Foreign Office and says she didn't know what her daughter was doing in Laos and can't believe she would be involved in drug trafficking.
British Foreign Office Minister Bill Rammell issued a statement about the case over the weekend, saying "The British Government is opposed to the use of the death penalty in all circumstances. We have made the Laos authorities aware of this at the highest levels."
The last execution in Laos was in 1990. A British lawyer has arrived to meet with the woman in prison, but a local lawyer must be appointed to her as well.
Wow, there's a lot going on in this story -- foreign countries, drug trafficking, a confused mother, lawyers, and the threat of the death penalty.
But at the center of it all is a pregnant woman.

WOW! I don't even know what to think. No matter what the circumstances of her being there were, she has got to be freaking out. I can't imagine. So nobody knows if someone planted the drugs or forced her or if she did this all on her own? This is just nuts!
We can't assume her innocence from here without seeing the evidence. We also can't assume that she is guilty for the same reasons. What we can say is that killing a pregnant woman is wrong. Obviously she chose to have this baby so that means that this baby has every right to be born. That execution should at least be put off until after that baby is born and perhaps some 2 years after that if the woman desides to nurse her baby.
Oh geez, my heart aches. I find death by firing squad a bit much for drug trafficking and let alone killing a pregnant women? Uggh... this is awful.
Obviously she chose to have this baby
obvious, how?
I wish they used firing squads on perverts. I don't know enough about the case to make an opinion but I hope that it gets handle the right way.
This is terrible. First of all I don't think that death by a firing squad (or death by any means!) should be punishment for drug trafficking. And especially if she is pregnant. That is just sickening. I think that she should be handed over to British authorities where she is allowed to have the baby and then spend some time in prison for her crime.
I wish they used firing squads on perverts.
Wow! That's a good idea! Where do I sign the petition? Imagine how much better we could all sleep at night.
I think the British government need to make this a serious international issue. I mean, for goodness sake, she GOT PREGNANT IN PRISON! And now they want to execute her and her baby? I understand that she may (or may not) be guilty of a very serious crime (in their country, anyway, here you wouldn't even see that much prison time) The whole situation shines a very bad light on Laos, and they may want to think about how they can cover their butts if the British government decides that they WILL NOT let this woman and her baby die.
sounds like a cover up to me. because she sure as heck did not get pregnant by herself. someone working there probably raped her and wants to get off with out being punished for it.
all i hope for is that they think of the baby an make the right choice if anything the baby should be alowed to live n grow up an be adopted to a family or even given to the girls mother to be taken care of i think it be wrong to kill her if she is pregnit to be honest i think being put to death for that is a bit strong chances r she just got mixed up in the wrong crowed
