MIL in the Delivery Room: Yes or No?

MIL mother in law in the delivery room

The question of who would be with me in the delivery room was an easy one -- I wanted my partner there, and no one else. Mom, extended family, friends? No thanks! But every mom-to-be is different.

When I interviewed Heather Armstrong (dooce) about her new book, she said her mom, sister, and stepdad were in the room with her and her husband when she gave birth. She wanted them to share in that intimate experience.

And I just read a post concerning this particular family member -- what about your mother-in-law in the delivery room? (Cafe Suzanne recently asked moms who've already delivered about MILs in attendance, too.)

Is she welcome when you give birth?

I have already had my babies, but I had to give my input. I love MIL as much as my own mom, so I would have let her if she had asked. But I knew she wouldn't. She's just that way!

There is no way in hell I would let my MIL in the room with me!!! If I had the choice between giving birth at a hospital with my mil in the room or in a car on an empty road all by myself, I would most assuredly choose the car!!

For my first birth I wanted only my mom and my hubby in there with me. By the time I was ready to go I was so tired I didn't care. I had my hubby, my mom, my sister, my step-mom, and my MIL. There was also a nurse, my doctor, a resident, and a med student, so it was a pretty full house.

Hell NO! My mother in law is gay! So not have her be looking at my vagina! Hell my OWN mother will not be in the room!

My mother in law is truly like a second mother to me, we go out to dinner, vent to each other when we've had a bad day, and generally have a good relationship. She was there when my second daughter was born, as was my mother and my husband. Honestly I wanted as much support from the women in my life as I could get, and in the end, she ended up staying the night with me when my daughter got transferred to a NICU in another hospital and my husband and mother went to be with her. Having her there was a complete blessing and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I had my MIL in the room with me when I gave birth to my first child. She was my only option because my husband was at tech school in MIssouri and could not get out of that to come. My MIL is a nice woman tho and we have had minimal problems and most of our issues occured when she went through menopause and I think it just made her crazy. I could never have my mother in the room because my mom is pushy and annoying and makes me feel totally uncomfortable. I much enjoy having MIL in there opposed to the other option. Now I would never have FIL in there tho!

I had a room full. MIL, DH, my mom and my mema. It was a great experience. Didn't bring us closer tho. We have an okay relationship, I wish it was better.

My So and his mom and my mom where there for our 1st daughter. I wanted just me and my partner but he wanted the grandmoms... So I agreed. This time I want just him and me, his mom already has plans on coming and my mom already figures she will be watching our first daughter. BUT we went to his moms last night and she was telling me the whole time I was in labour she was thinking I should just push the baby out, like I could really do that before I was dialated the whole way. Made me pretty ticked off!
