Is It Rude Not to Send a Thank You Note?

I noticed GoneHollywood posted in the Pregnancy group recently that she had sent a nice gift to a friend's baby shower that she couldn't attend and then never heard a peep about it. No thank you note, no call, no email (and she knows through a friend that the mom received the gift.)

She wondered if she was being old fashioned or too "Miss Manners" for kind of expecting some sort of acknowledgement and a thank you.

I've had the same exact thing happen to me -- I sent a gift to a shower I couldn't attend and never heard a word about it.

I know we're all busy, and speaking of busy, babycowart said in the thread that she attended a shower once where the mom-to-be was given a stack of pre-addressed, pre-stamped thank you notes as a gift. So all she had to do was write the notes and pop 'em in the mail. That is an awesome idea, and I'm totally filing it away for the next shower I host or go to.

What do you think? Is it rude not to send a thank you note? Do you always send thank you notes for baby gifts?
