Woman Mistook Her Abdominal Pain for Kidney Stones & Ended Up Giving Birth Instead

Grace and Bryson Mawn of Barksdale, Louisiana, were doing what many typical 20-year-old couples do -- enjoying an evening out together. But their evening ended unexpectedly when Grace had to be taken to the hospital, thinking she was suffering from kidney stones.

Their night took an even more shocking turn when Grace found out she didn’t have kidney stones after all -- she was actually minutes away from giving birth.

  • It all started on the evening of March 25, when Grace started having severe stomach pains after the couple had been out to dinner with friends.

“I was like, ‘Okay, you probably have kidney stones, you’re going to be fine,’ ” Bryson told KSLA News 12.

But Grace knew the pain was something else. “I knew, when I felt something down there, that it wasn’t a kidney stone,” Grace recalled.

At the hospital, doctors prepared to examine Grace, and just as she lay down, her water broke.

The couple couldn’t believe they had suddenly become parents to a daughter, Micaela, who was born early in the morning on March 26.

Grace and Bryson were understandably shocked. “The moment I heard that cry, I was like, ‘What! How is she alive? What’s going on?’” Bryson said. “So many questions, so many scenarios going through my head of what’s going to happen.”

  • Even more surprising, Grace had no pregnancy symptoms, was on birth control and still had her menstrual cycle.

She had also just taken a pregnancy test in January, which came up negative.

I never felt her move during the pregnancy, I never had cravings, I never had morning sickness,” she said.

“Looking back now, I did put on a little bit of weight, but it wasn’t like noticeable weight, so I didn’t ever think about it. I had my normal cycle, some months were a little lighter, but I just thought it was the pill I was on, so I never thought anything about it.”

  • The couple are thrilled with their new addition but were unprepared financially to welcome a chid into their lives.

Bryson is an airman in the US Air Force and Grace works as a catering manager at Chick-fil-A. Because Micaela was a complete surprise, they hadn’t saved up any money for the baby.

“I set up a GoFundMe for us, because we had maybe a couple hundred dollars in our savings account, and that’s a scary feeling, to know that we don’t have a safety net,” Bryson said of their fundraising site, which has already surpassed itss goal of $5,000.

In addition to the monetary donations, the couple are grateful to have received baby gear and support from friends, family and community members. “We’ve seen nothing but love and support for our family,” Bryson said.

  • But the young dad says he’s still in shock, having gone from being a carefree 20-year-old to being a parent literally overnight.

“And we’re both really young adults. I don’t even think I’m an adult. Like last week I was a child, and now we were put into parenthood in a night,” he said.

Grace says she’s still in shock, too, but so elated to have baby Micaela in their lives.

“Whenever I look at her I’m like, How the heck did that happen?” she said. “But I’m super grateful. And I love her to death, so I’m happy.”
