Positions to Try During Labor

Before I gave birth, I couldn't imagine how I'd get through labor and delivery. I mean, I knew I somehow would, but I just could not imagine myself actually doing it -- and how I'd cope with the pain. What works for every mama is different, but it's good to have options.


Of course, the epidural is one option -- and you may wind up having one -- but trying different positions can help, too. The Mayo Clinic.com has an illustrated slide show on various labor positions to try. Some include:

  • Rocking
  • Swaying
  • Leaning forward in a chair
  • Lunging
  • Kneeling over a birthing ball or pillows
  • Squatting

And when it's time to push, changing positions may help, too, if you're free to move around. kerridm asked moms in Pregnancy about pushing while on your knees.

Several moms who had delivered before said that position worked for them -- and the subject of childbirth classes as a place to get other strategies for coping with labor and delivery came up, too.
