The One Eating Rule That Jillian Michaels Begs Pregnant Women to Follow

By now you know to avoid alcohol, caffeine, deli meat, soft cheeses, raw eggs and uncooked meat and fish while you're pregnant, but now that we've tackled the obvious foods, let's move on to the not-so-obvious.

I believe all moms experience that primal need to protect their child, keep her healthy and safe, and give that little spirit every chance and opportunity to make her way in the world. That's why we have to arm ourselves with knowledge, and it starts with nutrition.

I have researched this stuff to death, and I can tell you the single most important food rule I have for pregnant women is simple and doable. Are you ready?

Rule 1: You must GO ORGANIC

If there was one guideline regarding food quality that I would like in neon, it would be this: Go organic. But before you say, "I can't afford that!" please know that organics are getting much less costly, as more companies are starting to produce basic, store-branded organic products. If you have the means and the access to go 100 percent organic, you could make no greater change in your health.

I'm sure you've read a lot of it: "Organic food doesn't have more nutrients," "There's no substantial evidence to suggest organic is healthier" -- blah blah blah.

Not true.

Going organic is actually more important than anything else you can do for your baby's health. For your Hot Mom bod, you also have to watch calories, of course. But get this: When you're pregnant, I would actually prefer you eat an organic toaster pastry than a container of nonorganic raspberries. In fact, I'd prefer you concern yourself with organics more than you would sugar, salt, saturated fat, starchy carbs, or any other nutrient. (Bet you didn't see that one coming!)

In a perfect world, you would adhere to an all-organic, whole-food, minimally processed diet that is calorie controlled (based on calorie guidelines established in my book) and nutrient dense.

In a realistic world, many won't have the finances or access to an all- organic diet. You will eat out from time to time, with no guarantee of the food quality. You will need some form of convenience, so a certain percentage of your food will be processed. And while you may have diverse tastes for many different types of foods, it remains extremely difficult to get all the nutrients you need without some form of supplementation.

So here are your top priorities:

Do not eat nonorganic dairy or meat.

Growth hormones are given to dairy cows to stimulate extra milk production, but the increased milk supply tends to lead to mastitis, or infections of the milk ducts. These cows then get repeated courses of antibiotics, which find their way into our milk cartons and glasses. Those antibiotics make their way down into our guts, where they wipe out all the good bacteria in our microbiomes and allow less beneficial bacteria to proliferate. (Plus, scientists say this overuse of antibiotics is a major culprit in the rise of antibiotic-resistant strains like MRSA!)

Reduce nonorganic fruits and vegetables.

I definitely don't want you to reduce the amount of fruits and vegetables you are eating, but I do want you to cut back on the nonorganic ones. These are heavily sprayed with extremely toxic pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers. One recent major study found that the babies of moms who lived within 1 mile of farms that used pesticides had a 60 percent greater chance of autism. A 2014 Harvard School of Public Health study found that six industrial chemicals (including pesticides) may be triggering recent surges in developmental conditions such as autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. The authors of the study urged regulators to immediately subject all industrial chemicals to neurodevelopmental testing and not call them "presumed safe" until otherwise proven -- an absolute ass-backwards practice that has caused tens of thousands of untested chemicals to be released into our environment and our food supply over the last several decades.

My pregnancy eating rules may sound fringe to some people, but I am telling you they are essential for maximizing the health of your pregnancy.
