The Best Time to Throw a Baby Shower

You've heard it's a bad idea to throw a baby shower too early, but then again, you don't want to wait until it's so late that the mom-to-be feels like a balloon about to burst -- or runs the risk of popping early before the baby shower even takes place. So what's the ideal time to throw a baby shower?

According to celebrity event planner Danielle Rothweiler, the optimal time for a baby shower is between the four and eight-month marks.

"Many women are superstitious about even sharing a pregnancy before the three-month mark, and medically, before that is the time when something could go wrong," Rothweiler points out. "Also, the first and third trimester are both exhausting, so the shower should be held during the second trimester. This way, the mother feels -- and probably looks -- better than any other time during the pregnancy and is able to attend events like these. If you wait too long, odds are she won't want to get dressed up to go!"

Yet some party planners say the ideal time bracket is even more narrow. Event planner Simone Jones Tyner, for instance, thinks the best time to hold a baby shower is when the mom is between 28 and 32 weeks of her 40-week pregnancy.

"It's a rather small but ideal window for several reasons," she explains. "First, if the parents have decided to find out the sex of the baby, it makes it much easier to shop for a gift. Second, it gives the parents plenty of time to organize gifts and shop for anything else that they need before the mom gives birth."

Since baby showers are rarely a surprise, when in doubt feel free to ask the mom-to-be what her preference is. She may have her own ideas of what will work in terms of timing, so don't be afraid to take her lead.

When do you think is the right time to hold a baby shower?
