The Daily Beast has published a list of 12 baby name trends to watch out for in 2014. And while some of the predictions aren't all that surprising -- "dowdy royal names" will be hot (George) -- others are downright shocking.
Here are the three most surprising -- and I do mean surprising -- things about baby name trends in 2014.
1. "North West" is a joke. Literally. While the name North (nickname Nori) is already rising in popularity, thanks to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, "jokey" or "punny" names, like North West, are just ... no. The Daily Beast surmises that the reason North was given a nickname so quickly is because North West just sounds too jokey. We all love us some Baby Kimye. But not enough to mimic her name style.
2. "Spicy" names for girls are where it's at. Evidently, spice and herb names are currently enjoying a surge in popularity. Names like Poppy, Saffron, Sage, Rosemary, Bay (as in leaves), Juniper (as in berries), Cassia (love!!!), Cinnamon, Cayenne, and Lavender are all slowly creeping their way up the baby name lists. So start rummaging through the spice rack, moms- and dads-to-be. Two options that might put you ahead of the trend? Clove and Tarragon.
3. Historic hero names are hot. There definitely has seemed to have been a trend with historic, noble names making a comeback. Two celeb babies this year were named Lincoln (Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, and Teen Mom Kailyn Lowry). Other names you may see more of next year? Huckleberry, Dashiell (yes!), Scarlett, Atticus, Chaplin, Zane, and McKinley. Love those. They're all different yet dignified names. So dust off those history books, baby makers! There may be some great names lying in there!
