Is the famously acerbic Simon Cowell going all googly-eyed and goo-goo brained for fatherhood? Cowell had made gazillions by being a sharp-witted, no-nonsense, prickly, jerky judge of other people -- but it sounds like he may be softening due to the expectation of a baby with Simon's girlfriend, Lauren Silverman. Well, sorta. The X-Factor judge told the Times of London: "I can assure you; I won't go soft," but then he started talking about his little spawn and sounded, well, kinda soft.
Although Simon recently vowed he wouldn't be "changing nappies" and would hire a nanny to avoid sleepless nights, he also accompanied baby mama Lauren to an ultrasound. It sounds like the experience left him more wowed than Susan Boyle singing "I Dreamed a Dream." He said:
I went to see a scan today and it is just surreal. You literally see this thing which is now alive moving around. I feel very paternal right now. I'm very happy.
Imagine Simon seeing something moving around and not critiquing its technique! Of course, we don't know how he'll react when the baby starts warbling Adele's "Someone Like You."
But, hey, it sounds like maybe baby will make Simon into a more caring individual. It happens. I can think of one man I knew -- a very successful, very smart, very cutting, impatient individual -- who, when he announced his wife was having a baby, I just thought, "My god, how he is going to be with a kid crying, screaming, throwing food?" But he was great.
Of course, it's not a guarantee that every curmudgeon will suddenly become Bill Cosby upon having a kid. But children have a way of opening up your heart in new and unexpected ways.
Who knows, fatherhood may even mean that Simon becomes quicker with the kinds words, and slower with the cutting ones. Not sure this will benefit his career -- but it will his life.
Do you think parenthood can change people?
