You know what would be crazy? Being related to Prince William and being pregnant at the same time Kate Middleton is. Even worse? Growing up as the less famous royal kid. Such is the fate of the Zara Phillips and her baby -- Prince William's cousin is pregnant with her first child. She and her husband, rugby player Mike Tindall, are expecting a baby in the new year, well after the REALLY Royal Baby is born. But will anyone be paying any attention by then? Oh well, let's hear the announcement anyway.
Mr. and Mrs. Mike Tindall are very pleased to announced that Zara Tindall is expecting a baby in the New Year. The Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips, Mr. Phillip and Mrs Linda Tindall, and members of both families are delighted with the news. This baby will be the first child for Mike and Zara and the third grandchild for The Princess Royal.
Just in case you're wondering where on the royal family tree Zara sits, she is the daughter of Princess Anne, Queen Elizabeth's second-oldest child and only daughter. This will be QE's fourth grandchild.
I'm sure Zara and Mike's baby will be just fine without all the obsessive attention Kate and Will's baby is getting -- maybe even better without it, in fact. But how weird would that be? It's NOT a competition, but that element of competition would still kind of be there. It would just be so obvious that one of those babies is a wee bit more special than the other. How will Great-grandmum Elizabeth handle it?
This kind of thing happens in families all the time. Two couples have babies around the same time, and everyone hopes the two children will grow up as friends. But there's also that sneaky bit of competition. Who walks first? Who talks first? Who wins the spelling bee, and who is the star of their soccer team? It doesn't matter! No one is keeping track. Or so we all say.
But add that royal element and that competition ramps up astronomically. When the two children grow older, they will probably notice that an entire nation (world?) is obsessed with one of them but not so much the other. How will that make them feel? For that matter, what was it like for Zara to grow up as Prince William and Harry's cousin? If anything, Zara will have loads of empathy for the position her child is in. Maybe she'll see all the insanity whirling around her niece or nephew and be glad her baby is spared it all -- just like she was.
Do you think Zara and Mike's child will feel less loved than Kate and Will's baby?
