I have mixed feelings about home birth. I initially wanted a water birth at home or a birthing center after watching "The Business of Being Born", but the costs weren't covered by my insurance and we couldn't afford it (we decided to pay for cord blood storage instead). I had a very low-key, easy pregnancy which in no way indicated there would be any problems during labor and delivery. I labored for 36 hours in the hospital (I went in after 2 days of labor) and could not deliver my daughter. Things went bad quickly at the end and I had an emergency c-section. I know that is not the case for all women, and I'm happy for those who could deliver at home, but I'm not even considering it for my next baby.

I would have loved to had a home birth with at least 1 of mine but because of complications, it wasn't an option. I'm happy for those that were able to do it...so much more natural and intimate.

A home birth could be great.......if you are a celebrity. I mean come on. They have enough money to do it and have great doctors and great people to get them to the hospital if its needed. It's stupid to continue to try and convince people to have home births. Anything could happen. Why would you risk it??

I didn't have much of a choice. I totally had a hospital birth planned (with my sister as coach), but my child decided to change the plans. I ended up giving birth to my child at home on my sister's couch. My sister was there and the paramedics made it just as my child was crowning. All in all, it took 2 hours.

I laughed out loud at the "30 hours of naturul birth."

That's great to read of more people choosing homebirth. I had four hospital births (one natural) and am planning my second homebirth!

I have a modest income. I chose homebirth. 100% paid for out of my pocket. Made payments from my first prenatal visit thru delivery. My hubby (whose 1st was delivered via C section) loved it! We did things our way with suggestions from the Midwife as thing progressed. No it is not for everyone but we would do it a third time if we ever have another!

Theoddone, from all I've read, home births (and birth center births) actually cost less than hospital births. So, I doubt it's a factor of these celebrities choosing it because they can afford it. As another poster commented, she has a modest income and did a home birth.

However any woman chooses to birth her child, though--more power to her.
