The third season of Game of Thrones has been breaking ratings records every single week. Of course, other aspects in our culture are going to reflect that -- so it's honestly not all that surprising that the fastest-growing girls' name in the U.S. may be attributed to one of its characters. Arya has gone up 298 spaces on the list of most popular female baby names since 2011, when the show premiered, and that's kind of awesome.
Arya is one of the best characters in Game of Thrones, with her strong personality, dismissing traditional female roles, wanting to learn to sword fight, being independent, her intelligence, her vulnerability, her willingness to be a leader when she has to at a young age -- it definitely makes sense. And Arya is a beautiful name! Even though she's capable of murder and lists each person she wants to kill at night, eh, no biggie -- it is Game of Thrones, after all.
Here are some other GoT-worthy names you may want to consider!
Jaime: So he may have sex with his sister and had thrown Bran Stark out of a tower, but he's completely redeemed himself in season 3 and has become one of the most likable characters, especially due to his friendship with Brienne (another beautiful name you may want to consider!). Charming, brave, skilled, and super-attractive, Jaime would be a strong, safe name for any boy in honor of a Lannister.
Tyrion: Haha, probably not so much, but Peter (Peter Dinklage plays him and is amazing at it) would be a wonderful alternative!
Daenerys: Again, probably not so much, but again, Emilia (which actually has gone up 55 spaces, from #323 to #268) would be a gorgeous name for any girl. Emilia Clarke plays Daenerys and I think pretty much every Game of Thrones fan has a ridiculously huge crush on her.
Jon: A classic, easy name for anyone who is desperately in love with hottie Jon Snow.
Robb: Another great, strong name for a boy -- these Starks certainly know how to name their kids.
Bran or Brandon: Same reasoning as Robb.
Catelyn: A very pretty name for a girl that would pay homage to Catelyn Stark, who's a loving, doting mother and wife and must remain strong for her family throughout a lot of tragedy.
Margaery: Unique yet easy enough for anyone to pronounce, and your daughter would be named after one of the most beloved and beautiful characters in season 3.
Melisandre: The name rolls off the tongue and is very pretty, but everyone will know what your daughter is named after. Plus, Melisandre gives birth to shadow creatures ... not sure if your daughter would be all that thrilled being named after someone who can do that.
Joffrey: NO. DON'T DO IT.
Hodor: If you name your child this, I will love you forever (even though Hodor is not really Hodor's name, just the word he says, but whatever). Hodor!
Are you surprised that Arya is becoming the fastest-growing girls' name? Do you like any of these other names?
