Hum, usually I see these titles and my customary response is 'wow, just a way to get people to buy expensive 'necessities' which totally aren't' but, with 3 newborns down to my name, I actually agree with the basics on this one. Now I did some things different, I prefer the thin 'cloth diapers' (the ones sold at regular stores like walmart and target or BabiesRus that no one in their right mind would ever actually use as a diaper) to washclothes, they're bigger, softer and cover the wiping, dripping, burbing, and spit up needs. And I just use an extra blanket instead of a dedicated changing pad. Good job on an actual list of necessities instead of the typical 'here, buy this' list of expenses.

I clicked on this expecting to see a bunch of B.S., but really this pretty much nails it. Good list.

Totally agree! I would add the small containers to carry baby wipes in. Can usually be found for $1 at Target or Walmarts travel sized merchandise. Then you can refill it when needed. I have had the same one since baby #1 was born 7 yrs ago.  I love the thick burp cloths cause they can hold a lot of spit up.

My favourite one for slightly older kids are those plastic bibs with the kind of lip on them which catches food spills.

:) Jalaz is right about wipe containers being useful, but we just reuse hummus containers.

The only one I didn't agree with personally was the nursing pillow. My breasts are so large that the pillow got in the way!

Only thing I had on that list was a diaper bag. We survived just fine and saved a shit load of money in the process.

Totally agree!  We didn't use a baby carrier, or the nursing pillow (tho I did have one, I was too bulky for me personally).

Definitely the wash cloths, we went through those like crazy!

When moms say that they got by without ANY gear and were just fine, I find that so hard to believe. Really? You didn't need a car seat? You didn't need any baby clothes? You didn't buy a baby thermometer? Women are so snobby, but there's no way they didn't buy anything.

I preferred a Moby wrap over an Ergo for newborns.  Yes a carseat is a must(Susan you are nitpicking).  Oh and for nipple cream I couldn't use one with lanolin in it( allergic), instead I used Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter.

For mom if the baby is not your first I would recommend some herbal stuff for those after contractions(they get more intense after each baby), 2 ones I know of are After Ease, and Contract Easy.
