13 Hottest Baby Names of the Year -- So Far

Hot List 40

LexPicking a baby name is one of the best perks of parenthood. Sure, we agonize over the decision and can spend weeks and months debating the choices, but it really is a great joy. Will he really look like a "Caleb" when he grows up? What if "Francesca" doesn't fit her personality? Is "Callum" too unusual? Are there already too many "Michelle"s out there?

Of course what really matters is how much you love the name -- after all, you are the one who will be blamed if he or she hates it. Well, if you are in the midst of deciding what to call your little one, you might want to consider Nameberry.com's list of the 13 hottest baby names of 2013 -- the first quarter of it, anyway. You will definitely be surprised and inspired.

Let me just say, I was shocked by this list. Gone is the era when Susie and Sarah reigned supreme. These days, it seems parents are going for more unique monikers. Take a look:

  1. Marnie
  2. Marlowe
  3. Nelly
  4. Mavis
  5. Thor
  6. Severine
  7. Bruce
  8. Wilder
  9. Phaedra
  10. Mingus
  11. Linnea
  12. Finnegan
  13. Christian

Thor? Really? I certainly didn't expect that one. Perhaps there are just a lot of Avengers fans out there. And what's up with Phaedra? Is that a shout-out to The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Phaedra Sparks? Actually, just about all of these names can be found in pop culture references. Christian = Christian Grey of Fifty Shades of Grey fame. Mavis is the animated heroine in Hotel Transylvania voiced by Selena Gomez. Isn't that tall, goofy yet hot singer on Glee named Finn? Though, I am doubtful "Hot in Herre" rapper Nelly or Die Hard star Bruce Willis inspired a lot of parents. But who knows. I actually like this list a lot. All of these names have character and are very memorable. My favorites are Marlowe and Wilder. Very cool, don't you think?

Which of these "hot names" do you love?

Are you really so thick to think that "Thor" would JUST be from the Avengers? How about NO! It's the Norse God of Thunder. My son's name was going to be Thorvald to celebrate our heritage. Way to be ignorant.

mande... manderspanders

I've liked Phaedra since I was a child... but that was from the song "Some Velvet Morning" by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood (circa late 1960s).  (this is the music I was raised on in the 80s btw).

I'm having a boy... and at 27 weeks, we still don't have a name...  Maybe James; or Lucas; or Wesley; or Weston.  I dunno; hubby likes very traditional names; I prefer more nicknamey-names. But nothing on this list works for us at all

I love this song, too! The name Phaedra has always fascinated me since I first heard it.

Wow MammaMel, way to be a jackass. This was a light hearted, fun article about popular names, and you attack the writer about something so stupid? She didn't say that Thor came ONLY from the comic book or movie. She just mentioned it. You owe Ericka an apology.

Brandy Smithson

my daughters name is Stormi sons will be (hes due in 8 weeks) Conrad both names (daughter i picked) have been a favorite since i was young (sons husband picked and as well has liked since childhood) i could care less what media is doing i like uncommon names i hated being in school and they say rachel and 5 girls raised their hands my name isnt uncommon but atleast the spelling kinda is and i never went to school with anyone who shared it

MRL84 MRL84

Mingus?? Ew.

Jessica Palestrant Garcia

I don't like any of them honestly. I liketraditional names but somehting no one in my family or friends have even though i am sure there are others out there with the name.. We named our son Giovanni since neither of our families had the name and none of our friends or their kids had it either...

Stephanie Falls

I'm not really into unique names. I like strong traditional names. I have a Josephine Elizabeth, a Kayla Cheyenne, and a boy on the way who will be named Landon Joseph love you sign

Ange Palmer

8/10 of these are horrible. And I only allow Bruce and Christian because they are somewhat normal, but still not preferable.

I'll be honest, I stopped reading at "Thor"
