Cool 'Baby-Name Picker' Predicts Your Kid's Personality Based on Your Chosen Name

You know the meaning behind your top baby name pick. You've researched the popularity info so you have an idea if Junior will be in a class of same-named kids, and maybe you've even given some thought to his initials to see if they accidentally spell a bad word. (Aaron Stephen Smith: ASS? Ugh, back to the drawing board.) But do you know what people who go by the same first name tend to be be like? Is your "Robert" destined to be a filmmaker, scientist, chef, or adult entertainer?

These are the questions the appropriately-named "Nametrix: Doctor or Dancer?" iOS app purports to answer, and the results are pretty interesting. For instance, I learned my son Riley's name is most common among Republicans, football players, Midwesterners, and ... um, porn stars.

Nametrix's developer says he came up with the idea for the app when he and his wife were brainstorming names for their future daughter. The software uses public data on millions of people (US census, US campaign contributions, Wikipedia) to determine what professions, political parties, and other affiliations each name tends toward.

For instance, are you considering the name Isabella? (Maybe you're a bit of a Twilight fan?) According to Nametrix, Isabella's info is as follows:

• Top occupations: Poet, Model, Actress
• Top party: Democrat
• Popularity peaked in 2010
• Most popular in the Northeast
• #2 in popularity last year

Pretty cool, right? Well, it is until you found out you gave your kids PORN NAMES. Here's what I got when I plugged in my boys' first names:

Really, both are most commonly known as XXX stars? God, why didn't I just go ahead and name them Long Dong Silver 1 & 2.

Anyway, like most baby-name tools, this one seems more for fun than anything else. But if you're truly on the fence between two names, maybe there's something useful in Nametrix -- with its thousands of first names, all with detailed popularity info and many with occupation rankings -- that will help sway you one way or the other. It's a free download, so if you've got an iPhone or iPad, check it out and see what it says about you or your kids' names!

(My name, by the way, is most popular among clerks, librarians, and homemakers. *adjusts glasses/apron*)

Have you tried the Nametrix app?
