Most Popular Pet Names Look Strangely Similar to Most Popular Baby Names

puppyI've had my pet names picked out for a while now. Once I get my hands on a furry friend or three, I'm going to name them Cheeseburger, Ryan Seacrest, and Roger Sterling, and we'll read the paper together in bed and laugh out loud at YouTube videos of cats. It'll be a real knee-slapper!

And, turns out, I won't have to be too worried about my names being stolen. The top 10 most popular pet names for 2012 was just released and none of my three monikers made the cut. Sweet. Relief. Curious if you chose one of the most popular pet names this year? Check out the list.

Pawnation went through the names given to about 1.26 million puppies born this year, and here's what they found:

Most popular female dog names:

  1. Bella
  2. Daisy
  3. Lucy
  4. Molly
  5. Lola
  6. Sophie
  7. Sadie
  8. Chloe
  9. Coco
  10. Maggie

Most popular male dog names:

  1. Max
  2. Buddy
  3. Charlie
  4. Rocky
  5. Cooper
  6. Bear
  7. Bentley
  8. Duke
  9. Jack
  10. Toby

Hmm, whatever happened to names like Fido? What stands out the most, obviously, is that 18 of the 20 names are human. (I mean, I suppose someone could name their kid Bear or Buddy, but let's just say it's not common.) And they're traditional names, at that. And popular names, at that, at that. Both Chloe and Sophie are in the top 20 of CafeMom's top baby names of 2012, and Bentley and Jack(son) are also in the top 20, on the boys' side.

I suppose people might want to give their pets human names because their animals are treated just as importantly and with as much respect as a person? Or because they like the name and aren't going to have any more kids? I don't know.

All I know is that Ryan Seacrest, Roger Sterling, Cheeseburger, and I will not feel threatened by a Bella or a Max. Weak sauce!

Is your pet's name on the list?
