I can think of lots of reasons why someone might choose to have a medication-free birth at home. Wanting to feel comfortable and secure in a familiar, cozy environment, for instance. Hoping for a quiet, more intimate bonding and breastfeeding experience after birth. Believing that pain and labor can be better controlled without medical interventions, and that interventions often lead to complications. But I have to say, I've never heard someone say that they want a natural delivery for bragging rights.
I kind of have to give model Amber Rose props for coming right out and sharing the REAL reason she's planning to have her baby at home. It also makes me wonder -- how many other moms secretly had the exact same motivation?
Rose, who's expecting her first child with fiancé Wiz Khalifa, seems pretty outspoken on most subjects. She's a onetime stripper who grew up in the projects and eventually ended up as a world-famous shaved-head model who was known for gracing the arms of many big-name rap stars, including Kanye West. After two years with him, she blamed their 2010 breakup on "homewrecker" Kim Kardashian, while slamming Kanye for being a dog:
He is your typical rapper in the industry. He can’t be faithful, and it’s not just with one person. He’s just unfaithful with a lot of different women.
I guess she must have changed her mind about rappers, though, because she didn't wait long before falling for Khalifa. She's currently in her second trimester, and seems to have a charmingly naive attitude about the downsides of pregnancy:
My first trimester was really hard, like most women. I threw up a lot. I’m still sick now in my second trimester. I just feel like I learned a lot just being pregnant this time. For my next baby, I’ll know what not to eat and things to stay away from.
Oh, Amber, don't you know it's totally different for each pregnancy? Except for undercooked chicken. That'll ALWAYS make you hurl.
She's also been open about her birth plan, saying,
I’m so ready. I’ve decided that I’m going to have an all-natural water birth. No medicine.
As for why she's going to try and avoid a hospital birth:
I want those bragging rights! The next time Wiz has a stomachache or anything, I’ll say, ‘I popped out a baby all-natural.’
I'm sure she was at least halfway kidding -- I mean, I don't think you choose to give birth at home unless you have some pretty strong reasons for doing so -- but I wonder if she isn't saying what a lot of women would never admit to. That really, truthfully, at the end of the day ... it's all about the invisible Medal of Mom Valor.
Not that she'll get one, of course. Amber will eventually learn that it really doesn't matter how the baby emerged from your body, it's pretty much hard work whatever exit route is taken. And if she thinks her guy is going to selflessly put his own needs aside in the fact of her womanly superiority -- well, if THAT'S how it worked, this video wouldn't be so freaking hilarious:
Do you think it's true some women want the 'bragging rights' of a natural birth?
