A groundbreaking new study on the cause of autism was released this week, and the focus is on dads for a change. So often it's the mother and her age or her health during pregnancy that's suspected, but this study found a direct correlation between a father's age at the time of conception and a child's chance of developing autism or schizophrenia.
The study published in Nature found that older fathers were more likely to have children with the disorders, while a mother's age had no effect. While the risk isn't dramatically higher -- about 2 percent higher for men 40 and older -- it could explain the rising rates of autism we've seen in recent years, as the average age of fathers has increased as well.
Researchers say this is significant. Dr. Fred R. Volkmar, director of the Child Study Center at the Yale School of Medicine, told The New York Times, “This study provides some of the first solid scientific evidence for a true increase in the condition. It is extremely well done and the sample meticulously characterized.”
So what does this mean for parents and parents-to-be? Well, not much really as far as I can tell. I suppose it might encourage some people to have children sooner rather than later, but the risk doesn't seem to be high enough to really alter your life plans. Maybe it makes vaccinations a little less ominous for some. Maybe it makes you rethink you ideal mate.
Mostly I think it's just one more piece of information to add to the complicated search for answers that are far too slow in coming for far too many families being affected by autism every day.
Does this study surprise you? Will it change your plans regarding children?

I posed a question about IVF or fertility treatments on another post. I have thought about this scenerio too, about either of the parents being older. Too me, our bodies were built to have children in our early years. Having children later, after taking birth control, using spermicide, and a host of other things, makes me think(I am not a scientist) that this has contributed to the raise in Autisim, depression and so forth. Why do you think they test more for down syndrome in older women that have children. I dont know the answer and I dont pretend too. I hope they find out the cause, and if they cant, I hope they find a way to make it better for the parents of children with Autisim
I think it's more grasping for straws, maybe they should look at where our food supply is coming from (insert China Here) and all the additives and crap they put in food US and Elsewhere...
I to do not believe age is the main problem I myself know of couples who are older the children are OK I know young couples have autistic children the autistism is new the past generations married with the couple being young wife older husband so be kind do not point at these couples. Yes grasping for straws.
I'll bet my left arm the study was funded by vaccination manufacturing companies! Doesn't really make sense to me!
I think it's more to do with the crap we put in our foods, HFCS, aspartame, etc. A number of homeopathic people think the digestive system plays a huge role in autism, but I see my friends giving their kids, autistic and not, diet pop, junk food, etc. My brothers were never diagnosed with anything but were very intolerant to red food dye as kids and couldn't have it if my mom wanted to control them.
I agree with the above posts about the environment and our food.... I wish they would do tests with the crap they put in our food and see if that ups the risks. Why don't they? It's upsetting.
My husband was 42 at the time of conception for my son but 43 at time of conception for our daughter and only my son has aspergers. Im not sure this has anything to do with autism at all and agree with many that they are grasping for straws HOWEVER Im glad that they are doing some research of some kind.
I agree with many that it has something to do with the food we take in either during the pregnancy and/or after birth
