Most women would probably agree that the safest place you can possibly be after going into labor is at the hospital, right? I mean, once you feel contractions coming on, it's generally a huge source of relief to make it to the hospital in time so you have the security of having plenty of doctors and nurses around.
And that's exactly how Stephanie Ihnen felt when she started having contractions at 38 weeks and headed to the hospital to have her baby. But when she got there, they decided she wasn't quite dilated enough, so the doctors sent her home. But it turns out they were wrong, and at 2:00 a.m. the next morning, Stephanie gave birth to her baby boy on her bathroom floor. Actually, her husband Josh wound up delivering him. (What the heck?!)
Are you believing this story? She gave birth on her own bathroom floor, all because the hospital made a mistake and sent her on her merry way -- while she was having contractions!
And while Josh was definitely a brave soul in taking charge of the situation and delivering his own child, he must've been pretty scared -- especially since he wasn't even sure if he was going to stay in the delivery room at the hospital to watch his son's birth. (I guess when you don't have a choice, you step up to the plate.)
Luckily Josh and Stephanie's new baby boy, Cameron, is doing fine now. But when he first came out, the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck and he wasn't breathing. I can't even imagine how scary that must have been for the couple, especially since they tried to go to the hospital and were abruptly sent home. One thing's for sure, that hospital is pretty darn lucky that little Cameron is ok; otherwise, they'd have some serious explaining to do.
You can hear more about their story in this video clip -- they're definitely two very brave individuals!

What would you do if the hospital tried to send you home after having contractions? Would you insist on staying?

Our very dear friends were at the hospital getting ready to have their daughter...she had been in labor for over a day and when the contractions were only a few minutes apart they went to the hospital...her doctor insisted that she was in early labor even though she was about a 4cm dialated, really strong contractions, but he sent her home anyway....so they left and went home only to come back a couple hours later...when she got there the baby was in severe distress, not getting enough oxygen so they had to do an emergency c-section...their sweet once healthy baby had lost so much oxygen in those hours between when she arrived and was sent home that she has cerebral paulsy due to lack of oxygen....had they listened to her and kept her, her daughter may have been healthy....and for the last 4 years they have had her in and out of hospitals for her breathing problems, hip problems, eating issues etc and STILL have to fight to get what they need for their daughter....im happy that this baby arrived healthy and alright but sometimes i think the doctors need to be a little more sensitive to the mothers intuitions because if they had listened to my friends intuition they would have admitted her to make sure that the baby wouldnt go into distress....
Ummm. I skipped the hospital and had my son at home. I didn't WANT to be in the hospital. My husband also caught (not delivered...I did that) our son. Without any help. It was the best thing ever to happen to me. It was totally an accident, considering I didn't even have time to get to the hospital, even if I wanted to (53 minute labor at the peak of morning rush hour) , but giving birth to my 10+lb son and letting his daddy catch him was the best thing ever.
I know the hospital I delievered both my girls at would send you home if you were not 8 cm dialted, one nurse actually told my fiancee how to figure out what 8 cm was and bring me in when I got that far. Sorry, he isn't in the medical profession, no one should should be telling him how to figure it out. I was so scared of going back to the hospital that I put off going in till the last minute, I went into hard labor about 4 in the morning, waited till 8 to go to the hospital, they told me my water hasn't broken yet and were ready to send me home again, till the doctor came in and saw that the baby was crowning at like 10:30. Out of all three kids my water never broke, they had to do it.
With my first the nurse examined me and sent me home saying it would be awhile. The second time I came in they put me in a room without examining me and left me there. After I started convulsing, I sent my husband to get them. After they finally examined me it was a rush to get me to delivery. The Dr. said I waited too long to come in. Yeah, that was me waiting too long.
