16 and Pregnant, Teen Mom, I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant, Pregnant in Heels ... it may seem like the topic of pregnancy has already been thoroughly exploited for reality television, but leave it to TLC to figure out yet another angle. Introducing My Teen Is Pregnant and So Am I, which is a show about -- well, you can probably guess from the title, right?
According to TLC's press release, the show is "a captivating look inside two families as they struggle to deal with two generations of women sharing this life changing experience together. And as their bellies grow, so does the tension."
In other words: moms who are pregnant at the same time as their underage daughters makes for great entertainment.
The show premiered on Wednesday night, and while it's currently a one-time deal, it's pretty common for TLC to air one-hour pilots to get a sense of audience reaction (they did this with Toddlers & Tiaras and Extreme Couponing, for example). I wouldn't be surprised if this turns into a multiple-episode show in the future, given how seamlessly it seems to fit in with the rest of TLC's classy programming.
Anyway, if you missed the show this week, one of the featured families was 37-year old Ann, who claimed she was actually happy her 17-year old daughter Liz was pregnant. She went on to say that she and Liz were more friends than mother and daughter, and that she was certain her daughter was ready for motherhood.
Too bad she didn't tell her teenage BFF a thing or two about the reality of becoming a parent. After the baby was born, Liz said,
I was picturing it more as being fun. It’s definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done.
Uh, yeah. Sorry your mom forgot to clue you in on how babies aren't Cabbage Patch Kids.
Another family was Melissa and her daughter Kristen, who seem ... a little more grounded in reality. Here's a clip of the two of them getting ultrasounds together:
God, that poor girl just looks so, SO young, doesn't she? I'm not sure what the benefit was to taking part in this show, but I hope she was at least well-compensated for participating.
Something tells me we'll be seeing more of My Teen Is Pregnant and So Am I, and in the meantime, it sounds like we've got yet another pregnancy-based reality show to look forward to soon. Get ready for ... Single & Pregnant in the City.

I had my first when i was 18.. and now am having my second at 20. idk.. i don' t like the fact that these shows are up. especially because it makes it seem surreel, and women really go through this stuff, you know. it also makes it seem (to the people and teens watching these shows) like no big deal after a while- like real life. it is real life, and the shows make it so the people don't realize this until it is too late. just like that quote from the girl, "I was picturing it more as being fun. It’s definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done." so sad.. i did tear up watching the video. it is super sad.
teen pregnancy is not glamoures at all it hard i got pregnant at 14 had my son at 15. if my mom was a mom i would be where i am this girl has no idea whats comin
The end of that video made me tear up! I had my first daughter at 18 but I got pregant at 17. Me and my aunt are the same age because my mama and my mamaw were pregant at the same time. It's not just a modern day thing. I was born in 1987 and so was my aunt. Yes I'm sure it was hard for them but things like this happen. I wouldn't bash the girls for it, or the moms!! Not only was my mama and mamaw pregant at the same time but me and both of my mama's sisters were pregant at the same time also! My oldest daughter is only a month older than one of my cousins and 3 months older than my other lil cousin. The girls are all BEST-FRIENDS! I'm very glad that I had a aunt that was my age when I was younger because she became my best-friend and we use to everything together! I wouldn't of been as happy as a child if I wouldn't of had Lori there to grow up with! I'm not sure if I would want all of this on a TV show but I'm not gonna be the mom who bashes these girls or their moms! Life happens, we just have to deal with it the best way we can!!!
I figured I would add to my above comment (Facebook comment from Autumn Banks) My daughters are now 5 and 6 while my cousins are 5 and 6. Me and my aunts had our daughters in 2006. (I also had another daughter in 07) We are happy and I'm glad that these moms are supporting their daughters!
People need to realize that shows like these are like watching a train wreck--it's tough to look away.
I was a "latch-key" kid when growing up. An only child with a single skanky mom who was never home. TV was different back then and I was basically raised by TV families, thinking "this is what a normal life really is". They weren't "leave it to beaver" but they were much more decent than what kids have now. Those shows taught me how to be an adult. I know it sounds crazy but it's the only explanation I can come up with for my happy, normal, long married, one husband, two kids life.
If I were a kid now, with the trash on TV... I'd probably end up like my mom. GAWD.
