Neighborhood Experiences Incredible Baby Boom & Makes Us Wonder What's in the Water

by Julie Ryan Evans on August 2, 2012 at 3:02 PM

baby bootiesA Minnesota neighborhood has had an incredible baby boom as of late. One by one the women there have become pregnant -- seven in all on just one block of yard-to-yard houses. Come February, there will be seven bouncing babies all there next door to one another. The odds of that happening have got to be astronomical!

According to a story from ABC, they were all friends before, but they didn't realize what was going on until summer when they were all outside more. Then the pregnant bellies were prominent and they started to realize how unique their situation was.

Of course the inevitable question to ask is what's in the water? While it probably has nothing to do with water, science does offer some explanation. Dr. Virginia Lupo told KSTP that at some level pregnancy could be contagious:

It definitely is known that women who live together cycle together. In a sorority a lot of girls will cycle together, so it's sure possible they could get pregnant at the same time. There may be something with the pineal glad. We're not sure, but there's definitely some kind of hormonal communication going on.

My question when I was considering having children would have been: What's for sale in the neighborhood?

Besides the support of going through pregnancy together, can you imagine having that many children the same age to play with right there. An instant playgroup just waiting to happen! I so wanted everyone I knew to get pregnant when I was pregnant so we could all raise our kids together. It didn't happen that way, but how cool for them.

I think our kids are meant to grow up together. I foresee lots of backyard activity with all our families, bonfires, baseball and hockey games, hanging out by kiddie pools and sprinklers in the summer and grill-outs.

Sounds like fun to me.

Were you pregnant at the same time as many of your friends or neighbors?

My neighborhood has 4 girls the same age, 3 born in the same month! Not quite 7 but not too bad :)

That sounds like so much fun! Having so many women pregnant at once is of course fun for the women, but could be hard on the men at times. XD but you're right, having an instant playgroup is ideal! I don't have any playgroups for my daughter, but she's only 3 months so we have time.

Yes actually, at my job 5 of us waitresses all fell pregnant within 2-3months of one another. It was the running joke there, 'what's in the water?'

In the tiny neighborhood (only two short streets) I live in, there were four babies born four months. October, December and two in January (my youngest being one of them). And only the one that was born in October was planned. The other three (mine included) were HUGE surprises!

Thats kind of whats going on with me right now lol. My sister is due in October, I am due in December and a friend of ours is due in Jan. So even tho we are a few months apart, we all get to experience things together. :-)

There were about 15 of us in our playgroup and between April and September there were 8 babies born- we've since had 5 more join us who had their babies during that time. Totally in the water :-)

We just moved to a new neighborhood, and surprisingly EVERYONE on our street has a 6 year old daughter, EXCEPT ME! My 14 year old is definitely seeing dollar signs though,, lots of babysitting opportunities for her!! LOL :)

We had 7 babies born in my husband's family in the span of 7 months. Three of the pregnant women had sisters or sisters in law (other side of family) that were also pregnant at the same time. So a total of 10 babies were born just in my husbands family and close relatives.

When I had my oldest he was the last of 15 born in our apartment complex (168 units) in a 6 month time period.

He was the first of 3 born in my husbands cousins.  Then 2.5 years later we all did it again, in the same order.  My 2 are the only boys though.
