The Teen Mom rumor mill has just gone from scandalous to downright scary. Kailyn Lowry has been accused by ex-boyfriend Jo Rivera of smoking pot while she was pregnant with son Isaac. This is not just some ooh, hehe, haha, what will these reality stars think up next kind of scandal.
Smoking marijuana while pregnant has been linked to some pretty hardcore problems for the child, from mental to behavioral defects. If there's even a shred of truth to the allegations, Lowry could sink below even trouble co-star Jenelle Evans (who has her own post-pregnancy pot problems) on the bad mom scale.
I say "if" they are true because, let's face it, an accusation from an angry ex-boyfriend thrown out on Twitter shouldn't carry the same weight as, say, a blood test showing marijuana in a pregnant woman's bloodstream. Rivera certainly could be talking out of his you-know-what. Kailyn Tweeted on Sunday that she was "disgusted" by a photo that allegedly showed his new girlfriend with a bong (the photo is no longer available because the account has been suspended). Rivera's response was fast, furious, and frightening:
@KailLowry your mind is blown? You were the biggest pothead I ever knew. Even smoked during pregnancy. Dont act like she's the devil. FOH!
Rivera sounds bitter and angry, and these are some pretty nasty allegations. So we should take this all with a grain of salt, folks. On the other hand, we did watch the couple on 16 & Pregnant, and she was living with his family. If anyone would have knowledge of what Kailyn was doing during that nine-month period, it would be Jo.
So what could pot do to a baby, any baby? It can be responsible for low birthweight, put a baby at a higher risk for SIDS, even damage the brain. So far, it seems Isaac came out OK -- he's now 2 and seemingly healthy. But the sad fact is, the effects of marijuana use during pregnancy don't necessarily show up right when a child is born. According to the scientists, there may not be obvious birth defects, but the affects of exposure to the drug while in utero are long-term. If Isaac was exposed, it could start manifesting itself later, perhaps when he goes to school.
I like Kailyn, and I'm hoping this isn't true -- not just for her sake but Isaac's too. It's hard enough being raised by teen parents in the media's spotlight. This kid could use a few breaks in life!
What do you make of this allegation? Is pot smoking during pregnancy a no-no in your book?

As for the comment about putting something in your system that is not natural - pot is natural. It's not processed. Remember it's grown on a plant dried out and then smoke. As for the no drinking soda when you're pregnant bull. When I was pregnant with my son I did everything by the book. Ate all the right foods, stayed away from all the wrong things. Took the pre-natals and the DHA lipid supplements for pregnant and nursing moms. Although he is very smart he also has severe ADHD, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Anxiety and shows signs of possible Bi-Polar. On the other hand with my daughter all I could drink believe it or not was coke. Even water made me nauseous. I came very close to being hospitilized because I was so sick. Barely ate and took no pre-natal vitamins because they would come right back up. Yet she was born with a better APGAR score than my son and has absolutely no signs of behavioral or mental issues like my son does. I'm also curious if any of these studies showing marijuna use during pregnancy caused problems for the fetus have been done in countries such as Jamaica and other countries in the West Indies where Marijuana use is common among pregnant women. That would be a good place to do them.
I used cannabis every day of my pregnancy with my 3rd child. It helped with the nausea, but I use it for anxiety. This was the easiest pregnancy I've had. My other 2 were born at 38 and 36 weeks, this baby came a day before my due date, weighing 2 lbs more than my previous ones (she was 8 lbs 6 oz..) I had an awesome birth, no epidural, an incredibly easy recovery, way less postpartum bleeding than with my 1st 2.. My daughter is the happiest baby I've had, she eats great (ebf, not one problem with latching or anything), she sleeps great, she's very alert and active she babbles and laughs like crazy. It's sad that so many people are still so uneducated about cannabis, yet have no problems with pharmaceuticals. I used to be one of those people, until I moved to California and actually started using my brain instead of believing everything I was taught down in the Bible Belt.
Oh please. This is ridiculous. Pharmaceutical drugs kill more people every year than all illegal drugs COMBINED. Marijuana has never killed anyone, ever. It is completely natural and safe, as long as you aren't toking up all day long. I trust Mother Nature over man-made drugs any day.
"Anything a pregnant mother puts into her body that is not safe and natural has the potential to harm her unborn child."
Marijuana hasn't been linked to hurting the fetus. It also hasn't been linked to lung cancer and actually shrinks brain tumors.
Also last time I checked a freaking PLANT is as natural as it gets.
I don't know if I'll smoke while pregnant or not, defintely not daily but it is the safest cure for nausea in my oppinion. Better for your baby than popping pills!
"Personally I think drugs are trashy , pregnant or not ... Ew no , cigarette smoke makes my eyes water & burns my nose and marijuana smell makes my stomach hurt.
I wasn't rised " like that" thank God"
@juniebug, it's too bad you weren't raised like that. You know what's trashy to me? Not being able to form coherent sentences. I smoke and can say things that actually make sence. if I do 'drugs' and make more sense than you...what does that say about you? haha.
