The Teen Mom rumor mill has just gone from scandalous to downright scary. Kailyn Lowry has been accused by ex-boyfriend Jo Rivera of smoking pot while she was pregnant with son Isaac. This is not just some ooh, hehe, haha, what will these reality stars think up next kind of scandal.
Smoking marijuana while pregnant has been linked to some pretty hardcore problems for the child, from mental to behavioral defects. If there's even a shred of truth to the allegations, Lowry could sink below even trouble co-star Jenelle Evans (who has her own post-pregnancy pot problems) on the bad mom scale.
I say "if" they are true because, let's face it, an accusation from an angry ex-boyfriend thrown out on Twitter shouldn't carry the same weight as, say, a blood test showing marijuana in a pregnant woman's bloodstream. Rivera certainly could be talking out of his you-know-what. Kailyn Tweeted on Sunday that she was "disgusted" by a photo that allegedly showed his new girlfriend with a bong (the photo is no longer available because the account has been suspended). Rivera's response was fast, furious, and frightening:
@KailLowry your mind is blown? You were the biggest pothead I ever knew. Even smoked during pregnancy. Dont act like she's the devil. FOH!
Rivera sounds bitter and angry, and these are some pretty nasty allegations. So we should take this all with a grain of salt, folks. On the other hand, we did watch the couple on 16 & Pregnant, and she was living with his family. If anyone would have knowledge of what Kailyn was doing during that nine-month period, it would be Jo.
So what could pot do to a baby, any baby? It can be responsible for low birthweight, put a baby at a higher risk for SIDS, even damage the brain. So far, it seems Isaac came out OK -- he's now 2 and seemingly healthy. But the sad fact is, the effects of marijuana use during pregnancy don't necessarily show up right when a child is born. According to the scientists, there may not be obvious birth defects, but the affects of exposure to the drug while in utero are long-term. If Isaac was exposed, it could start manifesting itself later, perhaps when he goes to school.
I like Kailyn, and I'm hoping this isn't true -- not just for her sake but Isaac's too. It's hard enough being raised by teen parents in the media's spotlight. This kid could use a few breaks in life!
What do you make of this allegation? Is pot smoking during pregnancy a no-no in your book?

it always irks me to see so much pot bashing founded in ignorance, assumptions and stigma.
here are some fascinating links to some articles and studies that have shown that not only does marijuana *not* have any significant adverse effects on the fetus, but on the contrary, it has been shown to have many positive health and developmental effects for both mother and baby. unfortunately, the amount of truthful information out there on this subject is sparse and buried by the overwhelming amount of anti-marijuana propaganda, primarily because the US goverment will never fund research studies whose conclusions show marijuana in any kind of positive light . . .
also, please note that while marijuana is certainly a SAFE and NATURAL medicinal herb when used in moderation (somebody up there commented it's not natural? um, seriously?), combusting and inhaling burnt matter of any kind is unkind to your lungs, and therefore isn't really the most ideal method of delivery for this precious remedy. (vapourisation is safer, more effective, and WAY YUMMIER!)
anyway, enjoy these links!

My daughter is a cancer survivor, and used medical marijuanna during her illness and also during her recent pregnancy for severe nausea. Her midwife said it was fine if used in moderation. My beautiful granddaughter is now 10 months old, talking, walking and potty training. (Maybe if she didn't smoke the pot, she would have been a little girl Einstein!) And to the person who said only put natural things in the body during pregnancy, marijuanna IS natural (if obtained pure), so you can't lump it in with OTC meds.
If it's okay for a pregnant woman to use marijuana, then I'll assume it's okay for a child to use it as well?
i have done a lot of research for every study on marijuana ever done. i took them all , read all the scientific facts, and nowhere shows that smoking pot can lead to mental and behavioral disorders consistantly and none of the studies can prove that other substances the mothers where taking or ingesting or exposed to where effecting the child. in all american studies ALL they tested for was thc and not any other chemical. they did a study in jamaica on women who used thc for MEDICINAL purposes and did not go over board and there babies where much healthier and more active. i do think that smoking anything is a carcinogen and will block much needed oxygen in high doses but just ingesting thc does not do anything but calm the mother, build her appetite, and help her sleep. before anybody replies to this just please do some research about actual documented studies from around the world before you build your opinion. it doesnt hurt to learn!!!
Educate yourself.
Her ex needs to quit throwing her under the bus, especially since he probably provided the pot! Smoking pot during pregnancy is safer then many OTC and prescription drugs given to pregnant women and even has benefits which other posters have already detailed.
It's up to her to make sure her son is in a safe environment at all times. She's entitled to change her mind about it after giving birth. Even if hypothetically she was still smoking, I could see her concern with Dad's gf (presumably somebody that spends time around her son) posting public pictures of herself with a bong. That indicates a carelessness on two fronts. One, since it is an illegal substance (even if it IS harmless) Dad and gf clearly are not concerned about CPS involvement enough to bother keeping it on the down low. Two, that kind of carelessness would indicate to me that they probably would think nothing of overindulging when they need their wits about them for a toddler and leaving bongs about.
Think of it this way: if your ex was or his SO was an alcoholic would you feel comfortable having your child in their care? Does that mean that you shouldn't be allowed to have a glass with dinner?
I am 54 years old, have three children, smoked pot the entire time I was PG with all of them and have to say, that had I not, they would all probably be certifiable.
HE smoked..and ppl look bad at her? what ppl do worse. i dont agree with it so i dont do it. but damn ppl. wowmen smoke cigs and drink and thats way worse
