When pregnant we all have ideas about how we want the births of our children to go. Whether it's naturally or with drugs, at home or in a hospital, we prep and plan for the birth experience we desire. Only sometimes things don't go as planned.
Mom Mary Beth recently shared her birth story with CafeMom Studios, and it's one of both determination and a little medical intervention.
Though she was overdue with her daughter, she declined to be induced because she knew she would be at a higher risk for a C-section delivery. So she waited, and spent time with family, enjoying her pregnancy and the kicks her daughter was delivering. Even when labor started, she went out to dinner, scaring the waiter with her wincing.
Once at the hospital the baby wouldn't come down far enough, even though she was fully dilated. After she pushed for four hours, the doctors gave her 10 minutes, and said if she could push her down far enough, they'd attempt a vacuum extraction. If not, it would be time for a C-section.
So she pushed, with all of her might. Inspired by a nurse cheering her on, she managed to do it. The doctor was able to use the vacuum to help get the baby out, and at a healthy 8 pounds, 9 ounces, Cora Ireland entered the world.
"She was a big girl and I felt every bit of it," Mary Beth says. "But t was totally worth it." Here she is telling her story.
How did your birth go differently than you'd planned?

I would not want a c-section because of the spinal block I am terrified of those.
Such pretty hair and lovely name.
Ok. Basically same thing happened to me 8 yrs. ago. Due to heart problem, couldn't have a c-section unlessit is was life or death. Once fully dialated, pushed for 4hrs/15mins. Finally the Dr was able to deliver her by vacuum extraction.
I see your question about birth going differently than planned but the story isn't anything awe inspiring. Just wondering about the whole reason behind it...I'm sure this kind of story occurs countless times a day.
That's just how it went when I gave birth to my son. Glad I didn't have to have a c-section, but now have hemorrhoids from pushing so hard. They showed up after giving birth and I still have them. But I also have my son who is thirteen now, so it's worth it. So glad they had the vacuum.
Maybe I'm alone in this but I read it totally differently. I didn't see it as the Mom looking for praise for having vacumm extraction; I read it as being about her knowing she wanted to avoid a C-Section and taking charge of the birth to do just that. The refusal to be induced, letting the labor progress and then trying her darndest to push when given a time limit. The vacumm extraction was part of the story but only that it helped her get the baby out without surgery.
To me the point was she listened to herself and advocated for herself with the medical staff and was luckily able to have a vaginal birth like she'd hoped for.
