We've seen plenty of stories over the years of women whose labor comes on so quickly that they don't make it to the hospital. Some deliver in elevators or in cars alongside the road. For a Utah woman, however, labor came on so suddenly she didn't even have time to sit down.
It was less than hour after Ellen Goldsborough felt the first contractions that she knew it was too late. She and her mother Elizabeth Carlson, were on their way to the running car her husband had waiting to take her to the hospital, but it was clear they wouldn't make it that far. Goldsborough told ABC4, "I felt the baby crown and I said mom she’s coming. I feel her head."
So they rushed back to the apartment, but didn't make it further than the front door when little Lily made her arrival -- while mom was still standing. Fortunately, grandma was quick with her hands and caught her.
Dad Geoffrey Goldsborough described the frantic scene:
Mother-in-law and myself just looked at each other like, deep penetrative gaze like Oh dear it’s coming. You know so we drug her back into the house. I had to kick grandma or Liz’s feet out of the way just to close the door.
Grandma said it all happened so fast, and that little Lily was "slippery as a fish," but a perfectly healthy fish. She weighed in at 7 pounds 8 ounces and was 19 inches long; mother and baby are said to be doing well.
Phew. I know everyone wishes for a short and easy labor, but that's a little extreme. It's great there was happy ending, but it certainly is one of those stories that makes multiple hours of labor look a lot better.
Have you ever had an extremely short labor like this or known anyone who has?

nothing like that. 1st birth was 6 hours, the 2nd 4 hours.
omg I thought 30 hours of labor was bad. I would definitely go through 30 hours of labor like I did than to have it go by as quickly as hers did and risk my baby falling on the ground. Thank god her mother was there to catch the baby this story definitely had the potential to turn into a very tragic one.
this could be my birth story. My third {almost 1 month old} came MUCH faster than his two big brothers. An hour and 40 minutes or so from when I woke up to pretty painful, long and close contractions. Made it out to the car, but there was no way we were making it to the hospital. Baby boy was born in the driveway next to our car. My husband was on the phone with 911 running in and out of the house. The last time he came out baby boy's head had delivered, my mom caught his head and daddy caught the rest of him. 10-15 minutes later the ambulance finally arrived to transport us to the hospital. We were the talk of the maternity ward or the day or so we were there :)
My friend had her daughter in the bathroom at home. She thought she had to poop (!!) and wanted to do so before going to the hospital. But when the "poop" wasn't happening she then became suspicious and next thing you know, grandma was called just in time to help her daughter give birth!! Total madness! Everyone is fine and the baby is now just two weeks old!!
My fourth child was born in the triage area of the labor ward of a German hospital. I almost gave birth in our van in the hospital garage. I didn't realize what was happening, but thank goodness my husband did. He said the only time I am ever irrational is when I am on the verge of giving birth, and he knew when I screamed at him to stop using the brakes while he was driving that it was time. I told him I was not going to get out of the van, but he said, "Oh, yes you are," and proceeded to drag me into the emergency room, where I was thrown into a wheelchair and someone ran me to the labor ward. My son is 3 months old now, and I am terrified that if I have another child I won't make it to the hospital!
One of my closest friends had a 30 minute labor!! And her baby was not small!
I would totally take the 30 minute labor. Generally when they come that fast and easy the baby is fine.
