Going through labor and delivery only to wind up losing your baby at the end has got to be one of the most devastating experiences a mother can go through, as an English woman named Sara Proud knows all too well.
Sara went into labor and was taken to the hospital by her partner, Steven Yorke, but when they arrived, they were told to move into a waiting room instead of her being admitted into the hospital. They stayed in that room for 80 minutes, when Sara's labor progressed, and Yorke realized she needed help immediately. He went to find someone to assist, and while he was searching, Sara delivered a baby boy right there in the waiting room.
The poor baby was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, and eventually two midwives did take him away to try and bring him back to life. Sadly, they were unable to revive him, and he passed away -- all while his poor mother was still in the waiting room -- delivering her own placenta.
Oh. My. GOD. When I picture this poor woman lying (probably on the floor) of a HOSPITAL waiting room wondering why in the hell no one helped her, I just want to break down and cry. She must have been so scared for the health and safety of her baby -- and then to have to deliver her placenta all by herself? I can't even imagine.

But the worst part of this story is the fact that Sara had no idea that baby Kyle had died until Steven told her the news. According to him, she's been unable to leave the house since coming home from the hospital, and both of them are absolutely heartbroken.
The couple has ordered an autopsy on baby Kyle to see whether or not getting proper medical attention would've given them what they expected when they checked into that hospital -- a happy and healthy baby boy. That's really all any parent wants -- and it's definitely what Sara and Steven deserved. My heart goes out to them -- and I only hope they can find some peace in the future.
What words of sympathy would you offer to this poor couple?

It's not often the wrapped umbilical cord that is the problem, but a developmental defect where a lack of Wharton's jelly keeps the cord from having normal strength OR from cord compression. Babies DO NOT breathe. The only way death occurs from cord defects is during compression or compromised blood flow. The nature of the umbilical cord is NOT to wrap so tightly to constrict blood flow to the brain and blood flow from the placenta is minimized at birth anyway.
I was in the ER with my son's girl friend. We had just found out their baby had died in the womb. They told us that labor would take a long time and to wait to be transferred. My son had gone to get food for him and I. She went in the bathroom and started yelling for me. I delivered my stillborn grandson in the bathroom. There was no one around and I decided to be calm and help her. A young lab tech cam to draw her blood right after the baby came out and ran clear to the other end of the ER and got help. My son came back about the same time. They were devistated. The ER people and then the OB floor nurses seemed to make everything worse. My son worked at the hospital and being on the floor with the new babies was horrible. Babies are born in waiting rooms and ER bathrooms in the US because hospital people don't know what they are doing.
This is terrying. I experienced a super quick delivery a few weeks ago. My midwife stepped out to check on another patient and literally after a few minutes, my husband and I were basically delivering our own baby...luckily there were no problems and baby is just fine but still its a scary thought for something to have gone wrong. My heart goes out to this couple and to anyone that has lost a baby or child...I cannot even imagine how it would feel.
This is tragic, and some people believe a national health care system will result in having medical personnel who ignore patients. My husband and I have had VA medical insurance throughout our marriage, and we always have had our choice of local physicians. We believe a national health care system in the U.S. will be much the same as what we have had with VA coverage. If England's system is substandard, maybe there are cultural, legal, and professional differences involved.
People, the article asked what words of encouragement you would offer the mother, not to go into politics and whining about the ACA. The ACA is not going to create overwhelmed hospitals, we already have that! Have you visited a local ER lately? It's not uncommon to have people waiting in hallways. It's a sad and tragic think that happened, but blaming a health care system is so wrong and has nothing to do with it. My heart goes out to these parents. What a sad thing to happen. :(
I had something happen simmiparly and lawsuit is a non factor actually. its medical and hard to prove anything even the fact they admit to almost killing me after I lost my boy.
I still have to pay the bill for the dr and was sued by the anesthesiologist was told I did not have to go to court then when I did not show up almost got arrested for not showing up! Bad lawyer advice on top of everything I hate to leave my house at all anymore its been almost 2 years now and I still have the bills over my head with no way to pay them at all. The hospital does not care the law does not care its not for enough money. No one cares but my DH and myself we lost our son. I will never forget him in that tiny casket ever.
