'Mom-Ed: Childbirth' Day 7: Drinking Placenta Is Gross (VIDEO)

drinking placentaIn today's Mom-Ed: Childbirth video from CafeMom Studios, Alice and Eden are in a celebratory mood -- 'cause they're discussing the joy parents feel after mom finally gives birth. Woo-hoo! Party time! They've got photos of adorable newborn babies, champagne for all, and ... a placenta smoothie.

Yes, some sort of fruit and soy milk (?) concoction that actually looks quite delicious from an outsider's perspective, but from an insider's, it's all bodily fluids that were expelled during childbirth. Yum!

Okay, so a few interesting things here. One, it never even dawned on me that I might be too exhausted to get excited over my baby right away. Glad that I've learned that this is a "thing." Otherwise, I probably would have felt super guilty if I experienced this. Two, interesting to know that placenta can help with postpartum depression -- a real fear of mine. But ... I will never drink a smoothie with it in it. Sorry. That's just where I draw the line.

Throughout my pregnancy I've kept an open mind, and I'd like to keep things as "natural" as possible. I want to have a natural birth without any drugs; I want my baby placed on my belly right after birth; I'm going to breastfeed (obviously); but I just don't think I could bring myself to drink my own placenta. No matter how beneficial.

To each their own, though.
