There are women like Jessica Simpson who crave healthy fruits and vegetables while pregnant -- cantaloupe in Jess's case -- and make us roll our eyes and want to hand them a pizza covered with pickles. Then there are women, like Alison Brierley, who craves roadkill ... and makes us want to vomit.
Yes, we're talking real-life roadkill -- animals trying to make it across the road, only to have their journey cut short by a speeding vehicle. Deer, pheasants, foxes, and owls are all fair game (no pun intended) for the 42-year-old Brierley, who not only craves roadkill, but actually eats it. She told Metro UK that while she's usually a pretty healthy eater, it's these critters that feed her cravings while she's with child.
It's more gamey than other meat and I love the taste. I also don't have to feel guilty about eating it because I know it's had a completely free range and natural life.
That's one way to think about it, I suppose. It should be noted that this isn't her first foray into dealing with roadkill. As an artist, she uses it to make jewelry, so there's part of me that thinks this is just a big publicity stunt to bring attention to her work. Even if that's the case, it's still unthinkable that anyone -- let alone a pregnant woman -- would eat anything of the sort. Who knows if the animal has rabies or some other disease, and it's likely not been stored at any recommended temperature. It's repulsive at best and flat-out reckless at worst.
Don't count on her friends to talk any sense into her, however. She woos them with her roadkill dinner parties, and they help feed her habit. "I get the best meat from friends who ring me up to tell me about a kill they've spotted on their way to work," she said.
Other women develop dangerous and bizarre cravings for things, like the smell of gasoline, or they want to eat furniture polish. Usually those are a result of Pica, a medical disorder that makes people want to eat non-food items like metal, clay, coal, batteries. In this case, however, it sounds like Brierley just wants to do it, which makes it even worse, and someone should stop her before she gets hit by a car or hit with a serious complication that could put her and/or her baby's life in jeopardy.

candy...it's pretty bad but not as bad as roadkill. i just want candy morning noon and night...i don't eat it...but boy do i want it!!
Roadkill isn't unsafe to eat if it is cut and prepared correctly. If she wants to eat it I say go for it. I grew up eating roadkill. :)
As for when I was pregnant, I wanted sour cream ALL the time.
I craved smelling Pine Sol when I was pregnant. My floors never were so clean! I would also be scared of rabies on the roadkill. But we live in WV and we eat a lot of deer and squirrel meat around here. It is always shot during hunting season never picked up on the side of the road.
Roadkill is just disgusting.I couldn't even stand looking at the stuff while pregnant!
When I was pregnant with my last, I loved smelling things! I would crave to smell things like certain laundry detergents, bleach and gasoline! Of course, I never dared to eat the stuff, smelling it over and over again did the trick for me!
If its prepared correctly and she wants to eat it then more power to her I guess. I know my cousins grew up eating road kill and have never once gotten sick from it.
The craziest non food thing I ever craved was snow but I didnt go around eating snow balls and the craziest food that I ever craved was pepperoni pizza with cucumbers which is funny that you said pickles and pizza.. That woman is just plain sick. Seriously why would she tell anyone about that... Thats just disgusting....
When I was young we were riding with my Dad when a large rabbit ran out and ran into our tire (We did not actually run over it). My dad scooped it up and took it home to eat. I had had rabbit meat before from farm raised rabbits but never roadkill rabbit before. I don't know if I ate any of the RKR or not but I hope I did not. I would like to be able to say that I went my whole life and never had to resort to roadkill. Yuck!!
