Surrogate Mom Is Left With Twins When Couple Changes Their Minds

twin babiesWhoa. I don't know why I never really considered the possibility of this kind of thing happening before, but I was fairly shocked when I heard about what happened to Canadian surrogate mom Cathleen Hachey. The 20-year-old woman was 27 weeks into her pregnancy -- with twins -- when she got some very unexpected news from the British couple who'd signed a contract promising to adopt the babies.

The couple was in the process of splitting up, unfortunately.

And oh, by the way ...

Cathleen could keep the babies. Now that they weren't going to be together, the couple didn't really want to be parents anymore.

Oh. My. God.

And it gets worse! Wait until you hear the way the intended parents broke the bad news!

Okay, are you ready??

BY TEXT MESSAGE.

That's right, the British couple who signed the aforementioned contract giving them legal custody of Hachey's babies once they were born, and who agreed to pay the surrogate $200 per month to cover pregnancy expenses, backed out via text message.

Talk about bad manners.

Thank god Hachey was able to find a couple in Nova Scotia who were beyond thrilled to adopt the babies (especially because the young surrogate already has two children, aged 1 and 2, of her own at home). And she's not bitter about the experience -- in fact, she's planning on starting another surrogate pregnancy in January. (I know, I know.)

This time Hachey will have her own lawyer, she says, a protective benefit she didn't have with the twins. Apparently, even though there are plenty of laws surrounding surrogacy, they're difficult to enforce, especially in the case of a "traditional surrogacy" like this one, when the baby(s) is conceived using the prospective father's sperm and the surrogate mother's egg instead of the prospective mother's egg. This method is easier and cheaper (think turkey baster in the bathroom), but in the end, those twins were Hachey's biological children.

I guess it's a happy ending for everybody?

Are you surprised that Cathleen Hachey wants to be a surrogate mom again?

@misplaced, so now being a surrogate is the same thing as sleeping with someone else's husband? How very ignorant of you. Apparently none of you paused to consider why they chose the method they did. IVF costs between 15K and 30K, so maybe it was about saving a little money? Perhaps the wife didn't have viable eggs? Perhaps she had a medical condition that she could pass to biological children? I can't believe how horrible some of you are being about a woman who is helping other people have children. And that's what she's doing, regardless of her reasons for doing it.

@Jennifer- I hope you're sterile, this world doesn't need more ignorant people like you in it. And if you already have children, let someone smarter raise them. How about next time you do some research before you open your mouth to judge others. It is illegal to pay someone to carry your child in Canada, you can only reimburse them for out of pocket expenses, aka medical bills. So really, the only way this is different than adoption is that the surrogate is making a completely selfless choice from the beginning and not later on once her birth control failed.

I'll take them, how can they change their minds? I would give anything for a child.

ps I read on abuot them breaking up but who breaks up after making a decision like having a child? You didn't see it coming, someone must have cheated that is just too weird.

I do not like the whole surrogate mother plan. It may be to help done who can not have babies but I think it opens the door to a lot of trouble. I vote closed adoption. Oh and I knew that surrogacy worked with the fathers sperm and the surrogates eggnusually...which would make the waiting mother not technically related at all. Although that is how it is with adoption. I guess we need to remember that who ever is there and raises the kids, blood or not, are the parents. So the people who WANTED the babies in Nova Scotia ARE the true parents here.

Sorry for all the mistakes, I got most of them fixed. I couldn't get them all on an iPad.

No, I'm not surprised that she wants to do it again.  An attention whore is an attention whore and THIS got her even more recognition than just being pregnant or being a 'sainted' surrogate.
