One of the best things about being pregnant is the "I can eat whatever I want and no one will look at me with fish eyes" card. You can have four slices of pizza, eight breadsticks, and two desserts without guilt. At no other time in your life will you be able to do that (and get away with wearing sweatpants every day). You may even find yourself eating some foods that you usually don't eat. Just like mama-to-be Natalie Portman. Get this, folks: she ate an egg!
I hear you saying, "Big whoop, she ate an egg?" Why is that such a big deal? Well, our recent Oscar winner is a vegan. Any animal product is a big no-no for a vegan. On a usual day, Natalie skips the honey with her tea, passes up cheeseburgers, and just says no dairy.
So ... why'd she eat the egg?
She listened to her body! That's one smart mama-to-be who knew that perhaps she'd have to change up her diet a bit to be sure that bambino growing inside was getting the things he needed. She says she's been eating eggs and dairy -- not just because, as they say, milk does the body good, but hel-lo, those animal products are in cookies, cakes, and other yummies she's craving these days.
It isn't the first time I have heard of pregnant ladies hankering for things that were on the pre-baby verboten list. A friend of mine was vegetarian, but when she heard she was pregnant, the first stop made was the Chik-fil-A drive-through for a chicken sandwich deluxe. I wasn't a huge fan of bacon before I was pregnant, but during the 40 weeks I carried Kiddo, I had a BLT at least once a week (extra crispy, of course). I also am not a big milk drinker, but man, I craved thick, delicious vanilla milkshakes. I'm smacking my lips just thinking about them.
How did you change your diet when you were pregnant?

When I was pregnant with my second I craved sausage- all kinds. I hadn't eaten pork in almost 9 years before then.
I've had more aversions than cravings. Like I've been completely disgusted by beef of any kind. Seeing or smelling it makes me vomit immediately, even though I loved it before.
It's really driving me crazy because I've never been a picky eater, but I'm eating like a bird nowdays because everything makes me sick, lol.
My main craving has been pb&j sandwiches. I eat at least one or two a day. I'm obsessed.
i hate chicken right now, and not big on meat in general (during pregnancy). but i'm loving some fruits and veggies.
I was vegetarian for 5 years, then got pregnant with a boy and ALL I wanted was steak. So I gave in. :)
kaylaird I was a big pb&j eater when i was pregnant with my second lol. and i usually dont ever eat them! With my third i went through two or three bowls of cereal a day.
and honey, comparing crack to an egg is ridiculous. dont be stupid.

Then they wouldn't be vegans, they would just be vegetarians. The term "vegan" means someone who does not use or eat animal products, no matter if it harms the animal or not.
@Honey
Have you ever been pregnant? When a pregnant woman craves something, it really means she's craving something in it that the baby needs for healthy development. When a crack addict gets a craving, it means they've altered their brain chemistry and body chemistry to need the drug. It's not serving any purpose other than to satisfy the imbalance the user put there. Pregnancy cravings are not the reason the US has an obesity problem, and US women are certainly not the only ones who get them. Sacrificing the health of your child for principles is just wrong. In this case, Natalie Portman gave up veganism for the health of her child. The baby wasn't getting something it needs from that diet alone, and she listened to it. It doesn't get much simpler than that.
I like my steak medium well to well, but man when I was pregnant I wanted it as rare as i could get it. The whole time I was breastfeeding too. It was crazy, but I ate it. Actual cravings, REAL cravings, are the human body's way of telling you something is lacking. So when I have a real craving, I follow it, pregnant or not.
