One of the best things about being pregnant is the "I can eat whatever I want and no one will look at me with fish eyes" card. You can have four slices of pizza, eight breadsticks, and two desserts without guilt. At no other time in your life will you be able to do that (and get away with wearing sweatpants every day). You may even find yourself eating some foods that you usually don't eat. Just like mama-to-be Natalie Portman. Get this, folks: she ate an egg!
I hear you saying, "Big whoop, she ate an egg?" Why is that such a big deal? Well, our recent Oscar winner is a vegan. Any animal product is a big no-no for a vegan. On a usual day, Natalie skips the honey with her tea, passes up cheeseburgers, and just says no dairy.
So ... why'd she eat the egg?
She listened to her body! That's one smart mama-to-be who knew that perhaps she'd have to change up her diet a bit to be sure that bambino growing inside was getting the things he needed. She says she's been eating eggs and dairy -- not just because, as they say, milk does the body good, but hel-lo, those animal products are in cookies, cakes, and other yummies she's craving these days.
It isn't the first time I have heard of pregnant ladies hankering for things that were on the pre-baby verboten list. A friend of mine was vegetarian, but when she heard she was pregnant, the first stop made was the Chik-fil-A drive-through for a chicken sandwich deluxe. I wasn't a huge fan of bacon before I was pregnant, but during the 40 weeks I carried Kiddo, I had a BLT at least once a week (extra crispy, of course). I also am not a big milk drinker, but man, I craved thick, delicious vanilla milkshakes. I'm smacking my lips just thinking about them.
How did you change your diet when you were pregnant?
