By all accounts, the baby shower held for Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon this weekend was an amazing pink-and-blue extravaganza. Gifts from around the world flooded in from fans and friends. But there amidst the nearly life-sized giraffes and handmade chair for the twins was one special gift that stood out as Mariah's favorite.
On her website, she gushed about the "Always Be My Babies" 'Lamb Book' she received. It's a compilation of letters and poems from her fans, which she calls "lambs." The cover is made up of pictures of Carey and Cannon as well as two baby carriages -- one pink and one blue.
She profusely thanked fans:
FYI-we so had a "moment" in the middle of the shower when they presented the book to me and everyone thought it was the cutest, most thoughtful thing ever! Clearly, only the Lambs would swing something like that home!!! It was the best moment of the night. I can't wait for the twins to read the messages and feel the love!!! : )
Clearly this gift touched Carey. There are plenty of things one needs when it comes to getting ready for a baby, or babies in this case, and everyone loves to ooo and ahhh over the adorable little baby clothes, but it's the sentimental gifts like this that mean the most to moms no matter who they are.
During the shower for my son, a friend presented me with a book full of emails we had exchanged. She had printed out all my hopes, dreams, and disappointments as I struggled with infertility, and then the joy and elation of finding out we were finally expecting a baby. There were my fears of having a miscarriage, my excitement over shopping for baby clothes, and pictures of my swollen ankles -- a haunting telltale sign of the preeclampsia that later came.
I cherish that book, and when I was pregnant with my daughter, I dug it out repeatedly to remember and to compare the experiences. It's one of the best gifts I've ever received, and I understand Mariah's gratitude for what her fans did for her. I hope every mother-to-be is so lucky.
What favorite sentimental baby gifts have you received?
