The New York Times reported recently that there's been an increase in the number of home births around the city, attributed in part to a documentary by former TV talk show host Ricki Lake entitled "The Business of Being Born." While hospital births still greatly outnumber home births in the New York City area, a number of certified nurse midwives have said they've received so many requests in recent months that they've had to begin referring women to home birth specialists outside the city.
"The Business of Being Born" argues that "women's bodies are perfectly well equipped to give birth at home and that the occasion need not be a medical event" -- and it shows several home births, including the tub birth of Lake's second child. (The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Medical Association both oppose home births.)
Women are talking about home birth around here. And debating the pros and cons -- though many moms are concerned about the potential safety issues involved with delivering in a non-hospital environment.
Home Birthing Mamas and Birth Is Normal could offer information and support if you're seriously considering a home birth (they're both private groups, so you'll need to join.)
Have you seen "The Business of Being Born?" What did you think? And are you considering a home birth, or is it just not for you?

I would love it!! I had such a HORRIBLE experience with the hospital I went to I never want to go back. Unfortunatly my insurance doesnt cover anything like that and I had an emergency C-section with my daughter and It would be too risky!!!
hell no! i have difficult deliveries and couldn't manage without epidurals anyway. i wouldn't even consider it without drugs - and why be at home? you're gonna be stuck there for the next year anyway!
My last child was born at home. You'll never get me back to the hospital again. I've had some difficult births but they were because of the hospital not because of me. I'm due in February and there is no WAY you'd get me in a hospital(unless it were a life and death situation).
I thought BOBB was really eye-opening and educational. Regardless the choice you make, I think it's great to know all your options and be able to make informed decisions.
I really enjoyed BOBB. I am currently planning my homebirth for baby due in Jan. This will be my first homebirth. I have 2 other children who were born in the hospital.
a friend of mine recently had a homebirth after having had 2 c-sections. There is less risk in a VBAC than in another c-section. Google the ICAN network
My homebirth baby was also a VBA2C.
I will vba3c at home if we decide to have another. I have not seen BOBB yet, but will as soon as I get a chance.
I actually drove 30 extra miles to make sure I was at the best hospital to deliver my baby, and I'll do it again next time--and every time! As unlikely as it is to have something go wrong, I need to know that anything I could possibly need for either of us is right there.
