When a 27-year-old Australian woman was pulled over by police on suspicion of drunk driving, she had an excuse: She was in labor. Now she was 8 months along, but besides the fact that she was completely sloshed (her blood alcohol limit was twice the legal limit), she was driving in the opposite direction of the hospital.
To make matters worse, she wasn't alone in the car. Not only were there four other adults in the car (hey, let's make the pregnant drunk lady drive -- WTF?), but also a 2-year-old, who wasn't even in a car seat!
"I've been in the job five years and I've never seen a pregnant woman that drunk driving around, especially with that many people in the car. I was shocked ... I couldn't believe it," First Class Constable Glen Phillips said.
Pregnant or not, it's awful, but add in an unborn baby, and it's just outrageous. Officers obliged her labor claims and took her to the hospital, but apparently it was a false labor in the very truest sense of the word, and she discharged herself.
"She's not winning mother of the year this year,'' the officer concluded.
I'd say that's an understatement. The story says she was charged with "drunk driving and driving while under suspension." That's it? What about child abuse -- for both the treatment of the 2-year-old and the unborn child? Child endangerment? Something? And what of those other adults in the car with her, didn't they have some responsibility to stop her?
While there's a murky line about pregnant women drinking -- and it's much more widely acceptable overseas than in the United States -- this shouldn't be tolerated anywhere. This woman clearly needs some help before she's allowed to care for the life she's bringing into the world.
Have you ever heard a worse excuse for drunk driving?
