If you're Canadian and looking for a sperm donor, you may find that it's a lot more complicated than you'd have hoped. Canadians have been sharing donor semen via social networks, and while I'm sure it's not an easy decision for women to make and one they take seriously, Health Canada says absolutely not -- in fact, it's illegal to use donor semen no matter what precautions you take and methods you use, unless you go specifically through their designated hoops.
However, it is legal, of course, to use donor sperm ... if you're willing to have sex with the donor.
Now, I'll be the first to agree that shipping untested semen to strangers is a really bad idea. However, I'm sure this isn't something women take lightly. It's not Craigslist, people, you don't just post "WTB: Vial of Man Juice, any will do" and then take the first person who sends you an email. Much more akin to dating services, information is shared, things are discussed, like family histories, and likely even requests are made to show testing and medical records.
Now, of course there are going to be women who treat it like Craigslist, but that's not going to be the norm, nor should it be the basis for regulations or laws.
But Health Canada says that you must have both parties tested prior and post donation, and the semen must sit for a minimum of six months in quarantine. So, you know, if you and your best male friend decide together to go get tested, and have him donate for you, it's meaningless unless you do it the exact way the law requires, and then you still have to wait six months while the semen just ... sits there ... in containment -- fresh semen is actually restricted. They have a National Inspection Program that checks out donation facilities to make sure they comply with Semen Regulations. According to their laws, donor semen is actually classified as a drug.
What's left, if you want to be law-abiding and not have legal action taken against you, is to have sex with your donor.
I'm not entirely sure what Health Canada expects to accomplish with their latest announcement. People who go through alternate avenues to get donor semen are likely already aware of the legal process and find it prohibitive and overly restrictive -- after all, if it were affordable and easy, who wouldn't go the legal route every time? Instead, rather than trying to provide legal and safe alternatives, they just condemn everyone who doesn't follow current restrictions. It doesn't take a genius to see that that's not really going to accomplish anything.
Now of course, breaking laws isn't good. Adoption, fertility treatments, and even donor facilities can be outside the range of the majority of citizens, so no one should really be surprised that they find ways to level the playing field to have children of their own. What would make more sense it to help them do it safely in the first place.
Would you get donor semen off the Internet?

THIS is one of the most ludicrous things I've heard in some time! Absolutely UNSAFE and UNETHICAL!
This is EXACTLY what happens when a country embraces government-run healthcare. You can bet there's more than a few politicos up on Capital Hill rubbing their hands together and thinking "what a great idea!!!!!"
While I agree that people should have control over their reproduction, there are a few things to consider here:
1) Canadian law does not state that in order to receive donor sperm you MUST have sex with the donor, simply that you must obtain sperm from designated banks. This, I'm sure, is to prevent the spread of STDs to women AND babies, and not to take away people's control of their own fertility. It's not so insane that sperm would be required to be tested and approved before a random, trusting woman is able to impregnate herself with it. Is it?
2) It would be virtually impossible for the Canadian government to KNOW whether you privately agreed to sperm donorship with a person. How could they possibly tell whether you had sex with the donor or used a turkey baster? They COULDN'T, that's how.
The law is in place to prevent irresponsible semen sharing (lol) and to protect people against STDs like HIV/AIDS.
PS: hoticedcoffee: Don't be so ridiculous. To insinuate that the canadian health care system is more money-driven than the American system is laughable. The fact that we have government-run health care has little if not nothing to do with this, besides the fact that our health care system actually has an obligation to protect all our citizens, whereas yours only protects those who can pay. How much does it COST to have the semen banked and approved. Probably NOTHING. You have to wait a measly six months. Quit ragging on my awesome country.
Yeah, I would take Canadian healthcare in a heartbeat, considering I currently have none due to the exorbinant cost. The American system is all about money for the insurance companies. Sure I could get insurance, but they jack the monthly cost up so it is not at all reasonable and the deductible is outrageous. As to the actual story, not being Canadian and being past my child-bearing years, I think I will with hold any major comment. Each to their own, although I have to wonder why it takes 6 months to clear a donation.

Jessica --- Really??? Repeatedly testing and preserving semen is free? I guess there's a bunch of volunteer scientists and labs that run on sunshine and cold air, right? I'm thrilled that you're thrilled with Canada. And I'm thrilled that I'm not Canadian. I'd be thrilled to help Americans who want Canadian-style healthcare, to pack their bags and head for the border. I'm not ragging on your country - it's lovely to visit. I'm ragging on your "free" government healthcare, which I want nothing to do with.
all you need is a friend and a turkey baster.
Thank you, hoticedcoffee, for perpetuating that awful stereotype that Americans are ignorant. Your contribution to the way the world views our country is so very helpful, and I am incredibly grateful that I live in a country where people are so ignorant of the world around them. The fact that our national pride has escalated to being blind to the achievements of every other country in the world is such an amazing feat. America is the best at everything, and if you disagree, you are retarded. No matter that Japan has produced some of the most ground-breaking technology, and that government-run health care does not bankrupt the denizens of most of the world. Nope, I would rather shout ignorant snippets of misinformation at anyone who is not an American citizen about why America is the best at everything. The fact is that America is a place where people can make leaps into a better life. That being said, every country has some aspect of the perfect society as well as unsavory aspects of disintegrating societies. Freedom of speech is an incredible right I hold in my country. I cannot, however, get my medications for a low cost because the insurance companies have such a hold on health care prices. There are ups and downs to socialized healthcare. It is not better or worse than privatized health care.
