The Perfect Little Black Maternity Dress

Megan Van Schaick

maternity dress"Scheherazade is easy; a little black dress is difficult," Coco Chanel famously said. I say, "And twice as difficult when you are sporting a bump!"

Maybe you can't fit into your usual little black dress this holiday season, but there are plenty of other options out there. The best part? These are real party dresses, not the old "cover-me-up" maternity smock of yesteryear.

Designers are finally recognizing that pregnant women are sexy too -- and just because you've got a big bump doesn't mean you can't show off your gorgeous legs! They've finally started creating dresses worthy of you and the fabulous party you're attending.

I rounded up five maternity LBDs that I think are particularly party-worthy.

maternity dressWorn with a killer pair of shoes and gorgeous accessories, this already beautiful dress becomes a stunning holiday outfit.

The viscose material means that the dress will glide fluidly across your body, giving it wonderful movement, and the extra bit of stretch woven in ensures a perfect fit. ($85, Polarn O. Pyret)

maternity dressYou’d never guess the Natalie dress from Moody Mamas (who also has maternity clothes at Target) is made of jersey.

The waterfall tiers, beaded neckline, and leggy hemline make this a super sexy party dress for even the most pregnant of us.

If you aren’t comfortable showing so much leg, try wearing the dress with a pair of opaque tights. ($110, Moody Mamas)

maternity dressWhen I first saw this dress, I thought it was made of some sort of silk -- the sheen, shape, and sheer volume make it appear like just about any material other than jersey.

This piece is definitely pricier than others on the list, but it makes such a statement, I think it’s worth it. (Incidentally, this dress was worn by actress Jeri Ryan during her pregnancy.)

The construction means you can wear it in several different ways, which means you can wear it to party after party and no one will know the difference! ($325, Isabella Oliver Maternity)

maternity dressThis little number by Maternal America might be completely non-descript if not for that pretty gold neckline -- that detail and the shape absolutely make this dress. It transforms the dress from a breezy weekend dinner dress into party material, and highlights your shoulders and neck just perfectly.

The dress is stretchy, so it won’t pinch at your belly (or armpits or anywhere else!) and the shape is universally flattering.

Wear it with an armful of gorgeous chunky bracelets and metallic heels -- people will be stunned every time. ($136, Maternal America)

maternity dressWhat’s the best thing about this dress?

The price.

I get so excited when I come across a deal -- it’s a little thrill! The ruffles, gorgeous empire waist with sash, and the scoop neck combine to make a very fashionable dress suitable for both formal and semi-formal occasions.

And that price tag means no shopping guilt! So you can buy the perfect pair of shoes to go with it! ($35, Motherhood Maternity)
