Crisis Pregnancy Centers in New York City: Honest Advertising or Manipulation?

by Sasha Brown-Worsham on October 15, 2010 at 12:00 PM

We have all seen the signs for crisis pregnancy centers on the subway or on billboards on the highway:

"Pregnant? Scared? Call Us!"

They rope young women in with promises of free tests and exams, but what they really do is pump women in crisis full of propaganda and lies. They tell her she will get breast cancer if she aborts. They tell her she will regret it forever. And they offer sonograms designed not to "date" the pregnancy, but to tug at the heartstrings. Maybe if she sees the "baby," she will choose not to abort.

It's raw manipulation at the most vulnerable time in a woman's life, and now they're potentially going to have to at least be honest about their motives in New York City.

“Crisis pregnancy centers” are almost always anti-abortion organizations run by pro-life groups. They don't offer a full range of reproductive health services for women, though they often advertise as though they do. They don't provide information on birth control options or referrals for abortions.

According to The Frisky:

“Crisis pregnancy centers” have also been known to repeat the rumor that abortion causes breast cancer, which has been debunked by the National Cancer Institute, to show women graphic photographs of aborted fetuses, and tell them things like “God will never forgive you.”

In short, they lie. And now they may have to be more honest. NYC City Council speaker Christine Quinn and Councilwomen Jessica Lappin are proposing legislation that would require “crisis pregnancy centers” to be clear. It would mandate that they:

  • post signs at the entrance and waiting rooms that it doesn't provide abortions or contraceptives
  • post signs if there are no medical professionals on staff

These "crisis centers" may want to ask themselves a simple question: Why are they so resistant to this? Are they really so afraid that if they're transparent, no one will come to see them? If so, then they must be stopped. That proves they are attempting to manipulate and cheat and lie and they're hoping that women won't be smart enough to care.

But we are and we do. Be honest and then see who comes to see you. It's the right thing to do.

Do you think these centers need to be more transparent?

Okay, so you've been to one of these crisis pregnancy centers, then? A person at a crisis pregnancy center has actually said the things you write in this post to you, in person. And are you The Frisky? You work for The Frisky and have personally interviewed the workers at a crisis pregnancy center and been told by them that an abortion will cause breast cancer? I've never been to one of these centers, nor have I ever had an abortion. They lie, do they? A Christian believes that God will not forgive an abortion-it's the Truth to a Christian. And why should a woman not be shown photos of abortions and the consequences? It's the truth - if a woman is so set on an abortion the photos should not sway her decision. CONT

CONT And really...The Frisksy - is this some highly respected news outlet?? Nope, it's just another site worked by women like you. When you have an actual interview that you have conducted and can speak to it from a first person point of view - write about it. Until then, you're no better than the 'pro-life' clinics you claim are spewing lies to women in crisis. And no, I am not a church-goer...rather someone who is so annoyed with this type of opinionated writing based on sterotypes and other related stories that have been read - it's like the telephone game.

I have a problem with the fact that this article is kinda based around undefinded hearsay, and the fact that you accuse them of being manipulaive while your article is doing the same... Your only source listed is 'The Frisky' and their only source listed for the remarks about breast cancer or telling the woman whatever to get her to no abort is from one HBO documentary which only visited one 'crisis' center. It's unfortunate you didn't portray it like that.

As to my thoughts on the legislaion- I understand WHY they don't want to be transparent ( they are tryint to attract and dissuade those who are looking for abortions) but I support the mandates they are trying to push threw.

If a woman goes one appointment and then doesn't follow through with an abortion then SHE is making the choice. She has the option to look into the information that has been given to her. This claim that women are damsels in distress and unable to inform themselves is outdated and unrealistic. If any young woman find herself unexpectedly pregnant the first thing she can do is go to her phone google abortion and have a wealth of information at her disposal. Those who are manipulated and ignorant are wilfully manipulated and ignorant these days. If workers at a specific clinic are being manipulative it's not very hard to research a clinic that isn't affiliated and go there. Then again if your unwilling to take those types of steps I'm willing to bet you weren't all that comfortable with an abortion in the first place.

These centers don't advertise that they perform abortions. I'm 5 months pregnant and have been going to a pro-life pregnancy center since 6 weeks. They offer free pregnancy tests (needed to qualify for pregnancy services from state health care), gave me an ultrasound, showed me models of the stages of development of unborn children, and literature on breastfeeding. They have continued to offer me care in the form of free ultrasounds and pregnancy counseling to teach me proper nutrition, what to expect from my changing body, and how to care for an infant. They also give me "Crib Club coupons" at each visit that I can go shopping two weeks before my due date for everything from a layette to a high chair to a crib. The center never advertised that they offered abortions or birth control. They do however offer counseling, adoption services, social workers and free support and care for pregnant mothers. The office is clearly pro-life although they never push it in your face. I don't think there would be anything wrong with these clinics having to state what they do and don't offer - but I also don't think there would be any sense in it. I don't think anyone believes these types of centers perform abortions and this article grossly mischaracterizes what actually happens at these centers.

I used to volunteer at a crisis pregnancy center and it is listed in the Yellow Pages under "Abortion Alternatives." What do you think that means?  In the name of the center is the word "Life". How is that being deceptive and manipulative? The girls that go there know EXACLTY what the center is all about. They are not stupid nor naive. It's very easy to get information about getting an abortion and find an abortion clinic. This article is ridiculous.

I should clarify, I have actually volunteered at TWO crisis pregnancy centers, one in GA and one here in PA. At BOTH places, it stated clearly in the phone book ad, that we didn't perform abortions and didn't provide contraceptives. After working at 2 centers, I think I have a better perspective than this obviously biased source. Get your facts straight.
