Thinking pink, dreaming pink, want a baby girl so badly you will do almost anything to get one? Then you may want to go on a diet.
A new study out of the Netherlands found that women who ate a diet high in magnesium and calcium (think beans and hard cheese) and low in sodium and potassium (no bacon, potatoes, meats, or baked goods) were much more likely to give birth to a girl.
As in 80 percent of the women who followed such a diet had girls!
Researchers also said timing matters. Baby making activities should happen regularly, but not on the days "immediately before or after ovulation."
And of course, if it's blue that's true to your heart's desire, then do the opposite -- which frankly sounds like much more fun as far as the diet goes.
The study looked at 172 women who wanted girls and previously had boys. When they followed this protocol, the overwhelming majority of them got their little princesses.
Interesting, and I've heard similar advice before, but never with such a high rate of success.
Other less-proven methods for trying to get a girl that float around include: Have the woman initiate sex, have sex during a full moon, and to make sure the woman reaches orgasm first. Of course, there are also some high-tech methods to try and pick your gender too, which I personally find creepy.
I never tried any of them. While I thought I wanted all boys, I didn't do anything to purposefully get one -- mostly because I thought they were a bunch of myths.
And I'm glad I didn't because apparently some of them -- like this one -- work, and because I couldn't be more thrilled to have my darling daughter.
Did you do anything to try for a baby of a specific gender?

No, and to be honest, I have a hard time believing this really works. It's about which sperm reaches the egg first, not what food is eaten. In a year, this study will have been debunked and another will take its place. I also have a hard time with the craze over getting a boy or a girl, which is usually followed by disappointment or depression, which I've actually read about on here, when the baby is born the wrong gender. It's creepy to me but then again I was just so happy to be having a healthy baby that pink or blue didn't matter. I was and am grateful.
Nope. I let God choose what the sex was going to be!
I'd like another girl (mostly for rooming purposes) but I'm not giving up my bacon, potatoes, meat, and baked goods! I'll take my chances!

I completely agree with you, it was just a happy coincidence they had that many girls.
Actually guys, this is totally viable.
It isn't "just about which sperm reaches the egg first."
The man's personal habits and diet can change the percentage of X and Y semen, and Y semen - those that make boys - are faster, smaller and die easier. Female sperm are generally larger, slower, and last longer.
Sperm sorting is done by spinning semen quickly so that the smaller semen (the boys) go through a fine mesh and the girls can't fit through. It's actually really reliable, moreso if you want a girl as sometimes small X semen can get through to the Y side, but its rare a Y semen is large enough to stay on the female side.
Anyway, this diet alters the alkalinity of the vaginal canal. It's a harsher environment for semen in general, meaning that the weaker male semen often can't tough it out and die because they can get into the uterus. When this diet is used in conjunction with timing, you have sex a few days BEFORE ovulation (which you track), and then the Y semen go into the vagina which isn't kind to them and most die, if they get through, there's no egg yet and they die before one is released, while the X semen take a couple days to work their way up there, not dying in large numbers from the alkalinity since they're hardier, and get to the egg when it is there, and they can survive a little longer waiting as well.
Seriously guys, a little research before you say it's not true or it's just luck. :)
Er, BEFORE they get to the uterus. The weaker boys die before they get there, not "because."
Yeah, the timing bit actually seems to work. Least that is what we used.
This actually makes total sense to me.... and explains why I have two girls. I HAVE to have my cheese. :)
I dont remember where, butI have read contrary evidence to the "time of the month" thing.
I havent read anything about changing the alkalinity of your body to get a girl... interesting, could explain why I have so many girls.
